I there not mm danger In having the man at liberty 'ht made the re quest of Governor Geer to pardofl Mur derer Tracy? It cannot be the request of a man desiring Justice to rule nor of one who has the welfare of the ris ing generation at heart. But perhaps the man has some bygone actions he wis foreotten and Is thus in sym pathy with Tracy. It Is evident the influence of the desperado Tracy has made deep impression upon oti people. This is made apparent in the terrible crime enacted a few days ago by Barkeeper Beiding, xrf Portland, who attempted to seek revenge and et himself in defiance of our laws. Wife, mother-lii-law, roomer, killed, and father-in-law serioudy injured, the work of this man. And after all he regrets that he was not success ful in killing the rest of the family. This murderer has been an observant reader of the heroic deeds of Tracy the convict. He had seen his pictures in the papers" and heard so many others sing his deeds. Perhaps the doctor will also desire to have Belding pardoned io that It could encourage a few others to take advantage of the laws. A few more such foolish re ouest and It' hard telling how many j more Traeys and Merrills will be created of our school boys. It is j nothing more than an encouragement for others to commit crime. REGATTA FOR ASTORIA. At the last meeting of the regatta committee, everything Indicates that the regatta will take place and will be a very successful one. II Is comparatively ea-y to moke a strong Knowing of the "loss" which has taken place. But, as a matter of fact, tne anthra cite mines are always idle four months of the year anyway. It makes very little difference to either tne compan ies or the men whether this Idleness takes place when It is ratted a " sus pension" by the miners or a " strike" by the public, or whether Instead 11 comes at odd intervals during the year when the public hears nothing about it. Last year was a very active year In the coal trade, but the breaker was only at work 1 day. On an averge there were lit working day or nearly four and a half months, in which noth ing was turned out. Miner had some work as "laborer" in addition to this. tasks which are not considered min ing; but even hut year, a most pros perous year, when the output fell just short of CO.000.000 tons, and was one half larger than In 1S8L passing all previous records, men and capital were "idle" for nearly twice a long as the interruption which ha just taken place to work during the past two months since the suspension was declared. Jt Is wasteful and Irritating organ isation of both capital and labor which has provided in the anthracite coal region so large a number of min ers that the largest demand of the j j public in any one year for anthracite coal can be met by Trkinj about eight months.
