Tho Astonan this morning presents
its readers with pictures of most of
the Republican candidates to be voted
upon tomorrow. A short biographical
ketch Is also given of most of them.
Neither are their facts or their history
apainst them. All oi! them have been
In .Oregon long enough to have made
a record which warranted their party
to place them before the people with
expectation 'hat they would be able to
stand 'the crucial test ot a political
campaign. This means that if there
was anything against either of them
that it would be brought out. In look
ing over the sketches of the various
candidates it Is astonishing lo find
that in a comparatively new country
like this, where immigrants are con
stantly coming into the country, that
many of the candidates are native born
Oregonians ,and several even natives
of Clatsop county: and all have livid
in t'lw state so long 'that they have the
Interest of the state thoroughly at
heart.
The Republican party has been aiv
ful and lucky in its selection. Not one
man on the ticket from congressman
tj constable has ever done anything
that the people can censure him for.
All are men of intelligence, honesty,
industry and thrift. No voter, be his
politics whatever they may, need hes
itate to vote for ?he ticket and may do
so with the utmost confidence that if
elected, tha Republican candidates will
give a clean administration. They not
only have their county and state at
heart, but they have the party of the
nation t their backs, ready to endorse

state of Oregon Is better " -t more
favorably known than Is he. For
nearly 25 years ho has resided in As
toria. All that he possesses is fwre,
all of his interests are In Clatsop coun
ty. He stands at the head of hts pro
fession in this state. He Is one of the
finest orators In all Oregon. He Is at
all Umya a plain, honeest and con
scientious man, loved by Ms friends
and respected by his enimie-s. He is
acknowledged to be one of the very
ablest men In hii state, either on the
stump, at the bar, or socially among
his friends. He 'has no use for riches,
and is appiYKVihabla alike to the poor
at well as the rich.

MR. 0. W. CARNAHAN
one of the candidates, was born in
Clatsop County In 1878. He was elect
ed assessor of the county in 1S90, re
elected in WM with more than 800 ma
jority, and In 1900 he was re-elected
again with the largest majority of any
candidate on the ticket. He is a char
ter member of the Astoria Progressive
Commercial Association (Push Club),
and was chairman of the committee
on roads of this Institution, and also
chairman of the agricultural commit
tee from the time of the organization
of the club, until he was elected presi
dent of the club, which position he still
holds. He Is an ardent advocate of
fish legislation and good roads. He 4s

Uncle Ham's army In the bitter sixties

that struggle. Ho came to Oregon in
"XKVVT."
18S9 and settled In Eastern Oregon. He
was a pioneer of the country and since
he came to Astoria whinh event took
