Mr. George Colwf-11, a lumberman
from Ilwaco, was in the city yester

them out of the boom the price had
risen to 7. Within the past month the
price on "rough lumber has advanced

TWENTY THREE DEAD
(Continued from page one.)
the number more or less seriously hurt
at not leas than 300."
CAUSE OF THE DISASTER.
This long list Is the result of a ser
ies of four accJ'lents, culminating In
one of the most frightful disasters In
.the history of Greater Pittsburg. The
telescoping of naphtha cars in the
yards of the Pan-Handle Railroad Co.,
in Sork's Run, was followed by the
ignition of the naphtha by an open
switch lamp, by the flowing of the
naphtha, first free, then Ignited,
through the culvert leading tb the
Ohio River, half a mile away and Its
explosion, with attendant damage to
it,. nwituMtf anil tiv th PTllO-
sion of original mishap", after hundreds
of people had been attracted to the
spot by the fire, whlcht was sending
up flames 100 feet high. ,
The telescoping of the cars was one
ot those things that not Infrequently
happen without serious consequences.
Its subsequent ignition, by an open
switch lamp, will later be fully Investi
gated. The cause of the explosion at
the point where.it once again broke
out into the open Is still a matter of
conjecture. It may be that the flames
followed fast the naphtha that had
gone before and resented the cramped
quarters of the culvert's opening,
Fending out a sheet of naphtha" and
flame that wrecked half a dozen hous
es In the neighborhood, setting them
on fire, and injuring not less than 100
leople Incidentally.' The shock of the
shot from the cannon culvert was felt
across the river In Allepheny, where
windows w ere broken. . The .burning
of the naphtha at the fountalnhead.
the t-vo naphtha tanks, was spectacu
lar tn the extreme. It was a giant
piece of fire. People came from far
and near to view the sight. The sec
ond explosion occurred fully two hours
after the first. There were three oth
er tanks In the imediate neighborhood
of the two tanks that had been tel
escoped and were burning. Efforts to
get them out of range had, for some
reason, been ineffectual. With a migh
ty splash of flame across the heavens.
and a noise that made the hills quake,
the tanks let go almost at the ame
! moment. From the heavens there des
cended streams of burning naphtha,
: flaming timber and Ted-hot Iron, on
the people on the hilltops.
PAIN-MADDEN ED THRONG.
I Maddened by pain, th injured dash
ed hither and thither. Those that es
caped gave aid to the less fortunate,
tore burning clothing from them, beat
at the flames, carried the desperately
burned and injured to more secure
. spots, and sent for medical aid, of
which they were In need. Speedily
all of the local hospitals were noti
fied of the second and greater catas
trophe. Doctors were Bent for In all
j directions ,and they were hurled, to
the spot on special engines provided
by the railroad company. The second
; division of the Pittsburg Railroad Co.
;ent out a number of cars, especially
for the transportation of those injur
ed and these were lined up both on
the Sheraden and McKees Rocks road,
and the unfortunate ones were carried
;to them.
Despite the fact that the rain came
pouring down all morning, thousands
of people went to Sheraden to view
the scene of the disaster.
LIFE SAVERS' WORK.
The Cape Disappointment life-saving
crew, under Captain Stuart, did some
good work Monday In rescuing four
fishing boats with their crews from the
breakers and recovering their neta,
which had been lost In their effort
to gain the line of safety.
The fishermen have been having
such hard luck the last few days that
some of them got reckless Monday la
their quest of salmon and ventured
tut too near the breakers just north
of IVcock apltt. It ta reported that
10 boat wer caught beyond the wife
ly Una whn a sudden chang e of the
wind all but drove them out Into th
open Six gained tihe calm wat
er without aaaisjanc. but tour ot them
would tiave been lost ld It not been
for the llf-avtni crew, who came
to their rescue. After the men and
their boat had been saved the men
of the station went to work to re
cover their nets, task which took
them until late this morning to ac
complish. ;

STRIKE SITUATION.
HAZ ELTON, Pa, May IS. The situ
lion regarding the continuation of the
present total suspension of work in the
Anthracite coal fields of Pennsylvania
is a trifle clouded tonight.
Apparent- overwhelming sent'ment
for the strike which was in evidence
ytsterday la not quite so prominent
now and predictions wer freely made
tonight that whatever the delegates ;n
the convention tomorrow ctu-rmne on
the outside wil lhave only a bare ma
jority. President Mitchell and his fel
low officials still maintain silence i.ml
every attempt tha: lias been made to
get their opinion ot the situation has
proved futile. ; Indications, however,
are that delegates favoring the strike
are tn the majority and will win the
fight tn the convention. It Is believed
that pro-strike delegates In the mid
dle and lower regions are numerous
enough to overcome considerable anti
strike sentiment in the upper region.
