He ts an American statesman. The socialists have pot out a full ticket in this state. Mr. D. T. Gerdes. a local barber of this city, has been placed on the congressional ticket Mr. Gerdes and the men generally who ad vocate socialism are good citizens, but running for office on such a ticket at this time is a hopeless chase. It Is not much of a chase either for the rote wiH not even approach respecta bility, numerically speaking. The ad vocates of socialism nor their candi dates do not expect succes, but they believe bonesUy that it is the begin ning of a great future. One of them could not be made believe anything else but that the cause is right and that It must eventually win out. They put as much faith in socialism as the coming means of redeeming the coun try politically as do the Christians In years believers in socialism have been preaching their theories and they have doubtless bad grounds for encourage ment from the- fact that their number is growing. To understand their the ory, they think, is to be converted and thr look forward to the time when this country will become a veritable paradise through the succes of social ism. The fact tbat the population is rapidly increasing and that many ad herents of this faith are coming to this country from abroad may give a magnified appearance to the growth of the average independent sfilf-surport-irg American, it has not .eached a stage sufficient in Am-rican politics to give it serious consideration.
