The bill in the lower hou of
congress for the protection of tLe
president of the United States is
meeting with some opposition on
the ground that no law should be
pasted giving the president greater
protection than any other citizen
of the country. It is claimed by
the opposition to the bill that laws
protecting citizens against us&ulU,
conspiracies and other crimes
against the person amply protect
the president as veil as other citi
zens. This is trae so far as , it
goes, but the average citizen is not
subject to the assaults of anarach
ists, as they do not strike at per
sons but at governments. If they
kill the head of the nation their
ambition is grabbed. With no
other law than the general law on
such crimes the anarachist may
fail in his work and only be sub
jected to a light tone or im
priroment and after paying his
fine or serving a short term in
prison he is ready to renew the
undertaking against his govern
ment With such a class at large
.in the country the president is
never safe from assault His life
is always in jeopardy. The law
which is intended to cover the av
erage offence against the peace
and dignity of the country was
not passed for such a class. It
was passed to protect citizens and
not the government and the head
officials of the government. " In
our free republican institutions
certain persons are often too easily
alarmed for fear that we may show
too high a regard for the head of
our nation; they fear that we will
come to looking . upon him. too
much as a monarch that he is
only a citizen and should only be
regarded as such; that the com
monest voter is as much a sover
eign as he. This is true, but when
the common citizen is elevated to
a place for a time where he is sub
jected to a greater risk of limb
and life by reason of existing con
ditions it is not only proper but
right to enact such laws as will
insure him better protection. To
pass laws to protect the president
is not lionizing himr or worship
ing him or bending the knee to an
individual in a high station, but
pimply discharging a duty to one
of our common citizens temporari
ty placed in a responsible position,
and at the name time discharging
a duty to the humblest citizen of
the country, for in the office of
president rests the sacred emblem
of liberty and freedom of every
American citizen whether he
comes from the highest or hum
blest walks of life, Let such laws
be passed as are necessary to pro
tect the head office of this nation,
and down with the idea that the
principle of bending the knee of
freemen is involved.
Now that the Clatsop Mill is a

thing which the Push Club has
up iU sleeve is in order. Big
things beget mora big things and
all of the little ones count It is
a good idea not to let anything
escape that will be good for Asto
ria, and the Push Club has not
been guilty of any such conduct
so far. What will be the next
successful move? . .'

When any politician or anyone else
speaks of the American press being
"manipulated" in any special interest
he Is talking rank soasrnse . It may be
possible to manipulate a few newspap
ers, but there Is no special Interest oa
earth big enough to dictate the policy
of the American press-
La grippe coughs yield quickly to
the wonderful curative qualities of
Foley's Honey and Tar. There Is noth
ing else "Just as good." Hart's drug
store. According to experiments conducted
by H. Jansj?n on Mount Mane It Is not
necessary to erect poles for stringing
telephone and telegraph wires in snow
covered countries. If the snow is sev
eral inches thick It serves as a good
insulator; the wires can simply be laid
down and be ready for the transmis
sion of the messages.
DANGER OF PNEUMONIA:.
A cold at tills time if neglected Is
liable to cause pneumonia which Is so
often fatal, and even when the pa
tient . has recovered the lungs are
weakened, making them peculiarly
susceptible to the development of con
sumption. Foley's Honey and Tar will
stop the cough, heal and strengthen
the lungs and prevent pneumonia.
