dence of the bride' mother on Grand
avenue, when Rev. William S. Short
performed the ceremony uniting Cap
tain H. P. Kindred and Miss Louise
Whidby. The happy couple left for a
wedding tour on the evening train.
On their return they will be at borne

Grand avenue.

PORTLAND, March 17. Fire this
this afternoon, caused by a defective
flue in Trinity Episcopal church, dam
aged the structure and furnishings to
the extent of $12,500. Loss is covered
by insurance.

. Annie, the 7-year-oM daughter of
Mrs. Peter Nufer, died of meningitis
on Sunday morning. Th funeral will
be held from the residence at 1:30 to
day. The steamer Callender will start
from Booth's cannery. Interment at
Greenwood.

had a hearing before Judge Neleon
yesterday afternoon. Upon being call
ed upon for an explanation 6? what he
came to Astoria for, Richards said he
was hunting a mining camp. After
hearing his story and siting him up the
judge informed him that there were no
mining camps in this section; that all
of the digging that was done hr was
for clams: that the people of Astoria
would not permit begging; people
here worked for a living and there was
plenty of work. He wound up by
fining Richards $50. but he made a pro
viso and that was that he would leave
town Instanter or pay the fine. Rich
ards preferred to leave town and Chief
Hallock saw that he left. He started
him east with the injunction that he
should not return.

day in October, when a penalty of 10
per cent will be added to all taxes due
The three per cent privileges was ex
tended to al Ipersons who paid half of
ehelr taxes prior to last Saturday but
as a remarkable fact only 31 out of
3274 taxpayers only paid half of their
taxes. All the remainder paid the full
amounts due.
