On Wednesday and Sat urday night the Ralston Physical Culture Club meets, and the classes are extremely popular. The only general gathering of the week wa the dance given by the Co tillion Club, In Hanthorn's hall, on Fri day night. Th attendance was not a large a at former parties given by this club, but the affair was highly enjoyable, and there Is no doubt that If more . dances are given later on. they will prove fully as popular as" the ante-lenten eries. A birthday party w given Mrs. A Scherneckau at her residence yester day afternoon. It being her Cnd birth day. There were present about SO of her friend and the event was celebrated in a happy manner. Be sides a general social occasion, lunch ands refreshment were erved. The party did not break up until late in the evening. A large number of val uable and appropriate present were received by Mrs. Scherneckau, too numerous to mention, as Mr. Scher neckau put it last evening. An entertaining prosram, in which some of the best local taknt will participate, ha been prepared. and there Is assurance of a good time for all who attend- , Mr. Marry T. Flndlay left yesterday mornine for Portland, where he will hereafter reside, having accepted a po sition with the Standard Oil Company. During the many year of his resi dence In Astoria Mr lFIndlay made a great number of . friend , all of whom . will regret his departure. On Wednesday evening Miss Tallant will entertain the members of the Wednesday Night Chafing Dish Club at her residence. Dr. Finch entertained at dinner on Tuesday eevnlnir,. his guests being J. R. A. Of late there has been a revival of Interest In the latter game. ' Mrs. E. W. Tallent entertained sev eral of her friends last Thursday aft ernoon. ' Light refreshments were served. Mr. A. B. Belcher and daughter. Mis Maud, have left Astoria and be come residents of Portland. Captain Cloke and Lieutenant Weeks were visitor in the city from Fort Stevens yesterday, Mr. Dr. Finch spent several days In Portland during the week. BOWLING NOTES. The Commercial Club and Irving Club team will meet Wednesday night at the Irving alley. It Is expetced the scoring will be much better than that which ha heretofore character ised the work of the players. The de tailed summaries show that all the bowler are Improving In percentage. - "Hooley" Allen, Commercial's famous southpaw, has been heartily congratu lated on hi excellent showing in the last tournament, when . he secured a total of 173, "Hooley" will soon re quest, that he be placed in the stretch das. , .. ,. ,"-j'-; The, women are manifesting great Interest In bowling, and ladles' day at both th club bring out the fait sex. The women make , much more rapid progress at the gam than the men, and ere long the local dubs will have ladle' team that will be able to cope successfully with outside team. There Is talk of match between the Multnomah Club and Commercial Clura trams. It I probable the game will occur within the next six week The Commercial Club will shortly make extensive improvements to it alley, which are Just a trifle slow at present. A new single game record was es tablished at the Commercial Club last night, when P. B. Sovey scored 77. The score was: Seven strikes, two pins and a spare, a strike, a spare and three pins. The largest scores ever made In the city were S2, by "Fire works" Richards, of Portland Y. M. C A., and 78, by Thomas Milburn. of the Oregon Road Club. CALL FOR PRIMARIES.
