DEGREES OP SUCCESS.
The publication known as Success is
a welcome visitor. To read t is an in
spiration. It is instinct with the spir
it of optimism. It is full ot cncour.
(Lament Its mission iwjm to be
the pointing out of the way. It ed
v orates cultivation of the finest natur
al qualities, say the Ledger.
However, the optlmUt who thinks
the effort he put forth will alway
bring the precise reward for which he
aims I too confident This does not
mean that proper efforts will be wasted.
It is in Itself good exercise. It it does
not lead to the chosen goal, at least
it leads In the proper direction. A
,iory told in the current number of
the magailne illustrates the point.
A boy was desirous ot going to West
Point The man who had the waking
of the appointment told him he should
have tt if he would be at the head of
his class at school. It was a large
class and the task was dlfleult The
boy went toward the head. He was
third and then second. Still the man
who had the decision ot the matter
told him that he must be first He
put forth extra endeavor and won the
appointment He was graduated from
West Point with honors and has given
his country good service. The story is
Intended to show that anybody who
wants to do a thing can do It. but,
subjected to analysis, tt does rot do
this." It shows the unsefulness of ap
plication. Had the toy rot tried, he
would not have won.
It (a fair to suppose that out of that
large class there were other boys as
anxious to be first as was the one who
became first. It might have been that
one of these also had something at
stake. Perhaps the promise of a
chance at Annapolis or a university
course was held out as a lure and a
stimulant The boy who was second
and Ui boy who was third may have
striven as hard and long. The one
who passed them had a greater capa
city. . '
In every walk 4n life this truth is
manifest There are few prizes. The
way to win these Is to put forth the
. best and bravest effort If the prize
go to another, still there is satisfac
tion and valuable drill and a fitness
for a different station. Not every man
can be president. It Is the privilege
of every man to try to make himself
fit for the presidency. In the finan
cial and commercial world, in all the
great fields of scholarship, of letters
and of science, there will be those who
excel. There are leaders, natural born
While circumstances may have favor
ed some of the great figures in af-'
fairs, the millionaires for ' the most
part are such because of an inherent
forcefulness. No intensity of applica
tion nor of Industry can change the
man of modest intellect and moderate
potency Into one of the giants of bis
time. There have been a few poets,
but countless makers of rhyme. There
has been a single Shakespeare, and
probably the world will never know
another. The mentality of a Newton,
a Bacon or a Kant is brought into
existence by a creative process that
neither striving nor yearning nor pray
ing can place in the brain of one of
different intellectual caliber. Knowl
edge of this circumstance Is not de
pressing. The utility of aiming high is
not to be denied because there are
some from whom has .been withheld
the power to strike the target. None
is worse for the trying.

JUSTICE,
It portrayed as a woman,
vet her sex might complain
that they get scant benefit
of her powers. There is
little justice, it would seem,
in the suffering that many
women undergo month after
month.
Justice acta upon the
legal maxim that ignor

pleaded in mitigation of
punishment It is ignorance
which causes so much
womanly suffering. Ignor
ance of the requirements of
womanly health ; ignorance
on the "part of those who
attempt to cure and fail,
and ignorance of the fact
that Dr. Pierce's Favorite
Prescription cures womanly
diseases. It establishes
