Assured Leading Meu of the
Lasting Feeling of Friend

LONDON, March l Lord Avebury
(Sir John Lubbock) prealded last night
at the banquet her of the Associat
ed Chambers of Commerce of the Unit'
ed Kingdom.
Jowph .H, Choate, American ambas
sador to Great Britain, In replying to
a toast "The Ambassadors,'' said that
upon returning from America, the land
of sunshine, to the Impenetrable fog of
London he began to think his
country owed more to sunshine
than many of his countrymen
were willing to believe. He was
ready to concede that the inhabitants
of these foggy islands had had
marvelous series of centuries of suc
cess and renown. The future alone
eoukl tell, continued the speaker, what
bis own countrymen might achieve
under brighter sides.
Mr. Choate eloquently referred to
two dreamers who had lived one bun
dred and fifty years apart. The first
was Benjamin Franklin, who pictured
the American continent peopled and
ruled by the British; the second was
Lord Rosebery, who Indulged In pic
tures of what might have happened if
s separation had not occurred. Mr.
Choate asked it the actual picture seen
today was not far grander than the
pictures either of Franklin or Lord
Rosebery. Great Britain and America
were, mighty nations, standing together
as friends, not allies; neither one lock

lines the same great ends of clvlllia
