Efforts to Find Missing Rout's Crew
of Steamer Hristol Prove Fruitless.
VICTORIA. IS. C. Jan. n.-The last
hope held out for the safety of the
missing boat's crew of the wrecked
steamer Hristol, was shattered this
morning on the arrival of the steam
er Amur from the north.
A starch was made, the sttnmer

evidence of the lost ones being found,
but without avail.

Rrought Opium From Port Townsend
to Astoria, but Was Nailed
in Portland.
PORTLAND. Jan. 21. Larry Kelly,
one of the oldest and said to be one
of the most sucessful smugglers of
the Northwest, was "bagg d" this
morning by Deputy I'nited States In
spector of Customs M. J. Gallagher,
with a valise of opium, valued at JSOO.
Gallagher was detailed on the case
about a week ago. and this morning
arrested Kelly as he was leaving the
boat that came In from Astoria- As
he had the contraband article with
him. there was no escape. Kelly
broke down, admitted his guil; and
bemoaned his weakness in coming to
Portland. He said he would plead
guilty to smuggling opium, and an

Hall. Kelly was arraigned and will
b- semen,-, d tomorrow morning by
Judge Rol'iinger in the I'ni.ed Spites
court.
The officers acount for his reaching
Portland from Astoria by figuring out
that he went to Port Townsend then
to Ilwaco. across to Astoria, and then
to Portland by water. This is the
second time he has been mid r arrest
here. Some months ago he was ar
rested, found guilty and given a term
in the county Jail.
