Nelson during the night, and the fol
lowing morning the man was violent.
The sheriff was again sent f r and

ever and he was placed in the right
corridor of the Jail. The other Nel
son. ' Lighthouse," who was serving
a term for larceny. Is a trusty. "Light
house" volunteered to attend to the
v.ants of the demented man and Is
rael was not locked In the corridor.
When breakfast was brought, the
two Nelsons sat down together. For
a moment or two Israel geemed ra
tional, but suddenly he began throw
ing the food about, and then made a
lunge at "Lighthouse." The latter al
eo lunged and a mlx-up followed. The
Jail-mate. The thumb was bitten off
as squarely as if a knife had been used
to sever It. Despite his painful Injur
ies, "Lighthouse." who himself has a
reputation as a fighter, grappled with
the lunatic and a desperate battle fol
lowed. Finally the trusty succeeded in
getting the man back into the corri
dor and locked him in. The trusty
made no outcry, else the officials in the
sheriff's office would have gone to his
i assistance.
