CHICAGO, Dec. 9 A dispatch to the Record-Herald from Washington says: Andrew Carnegie 1 to give $10,000,000 to the cause of university extension In the United States. Announcement this great gift to education will be made at the White House on Tuesday. Mr. Carnegie was here a few days ago and took luncheon with President Roose velt, when details of the plan were dully discussed. Mr. Carnegie ha thought best to create a national board to handle this munificent bene faction. President Roosevelt will probably name su.h a board for Mr. Carnegie, or at least set in motion the machinery which shall lead to a na tional organization. Mr. Carnegie Is expected here tomor row or on Tuesday and fuller detail of this gigantic enterprise will soon Ix-eome public. Nil hola Murray butler, who has succeeded Beth Low at the bead of Columbia college, has been for two days a guest of President Roosevelt at the White House, and he has aided in perfecting the plans. Mr. Butler left New York at 4 o'cKxk this afternoon and before going refused to give any particulars lieyond the Information that an announcement would be made on Tuesduv at the White House. Mr. Hutler has long been one of the fore most champions of university exten sion and It Is understood Mr. Carnegie has had frenuent consultations with him concerning the enterprise. Accordinir to the plans prepared by Mr. Carnegie and his advisers the na tional oricanlxatlon Is to hare '.s head quarters In Washington but its opera tions are to extend throughout the United States, the work to be carried on In co-operation with universities everywhere. Mr. Carnegie's gift is for the pur pose of establishing in Washington, a university for higher education. Long, forty-seven davs from Cape Nome, with ninety passengers and fifteen stowaways, ar rived here today. According to the passenger she had the most ventful voyage of any vessel ever sailing from the (North. The Long sailed from Nome October 23 with provisions enough to last to Dutch Harbor, under favorable cir cumstances. Before reaching thnt port the water supply gave out an.J. for two days the passengers were without water. From the time of sailing from Dutch Harbor the Long experienced continual gales of unusual seventy. the most severe being on November U. when the seas swept the vessel from stem to stern, carrying away a oortlon of the water supply and on life boat. Mate Hanson was washed overboard by an Immense sea and drowned. The last two week of the voyage the passengers had to depend on what rain FEARS SIIE IS DEAD.
