Some five yeii-a ago, Mr. Osborne, who
lives near Dallas, killed a wild goose
and found two large grains of wheat
In its craw. He planted them and re
planted the product until now he has
two und on.'-hnlf acres of fi:ie looking
grain. The heads are extra long nnd
the grain large, the yield being perhaps
on-thlrd more than ordinary wheat. II
has no name for the new variety, but
believes It to be a prospective big thing.

ODD WAY8 OF THB 13 HAVE ft.
How He Manage) p Btay Undr Water
Hi Umg In Winter,
Th current cumber of JliJ and Gun
In Canada has an art'de on the habit
of th. b-aver, In wh!:h the writer,
Frank H. Itlsu-n, tells orne Interest
ing things abnu taht mot Interesting
of Norti Am'Tlcan anlnia'is. Of the
cutting pow.-r of the beiver'i tee.h the
writer says:
"The beaver Is really a s'irt of port
able puip mill, grlrftilrg up moat any
kind of wo id tint turn-i his way. I
one iiii-.iMir.-J a white birch tree, tw.n-
iy-ii. incns tnriiugh, cut down by a
heaver. A single beaver generally, If
not always, amputates the tree, anl
when It conies down the Whole family
fill ti and have a rijjullr frolic wllh
the bark an l branch. . A big heaver
will bring down a falr-sixed sapll .'g. say
three lrichi through, in about two min
ute, -and a larg.' tree In aijout an hour.
"One of the queerest facts about the
beaver is the rapidity with which his
long, chlsei-ahip'.-d teeth will recover
from an inlury. I hive known btravers
to break their teeth in biting a trp,
and when I caught them again ten days
afterward y.ai couldn't ee a sign of.j
the break the teeth had grown out to
their frmer perfection in that short
period."
Mr. Illsten's rxperltices have not glv
en him i very high opinion of the beav.
er'a swimming powers. He writ-:
"As comip-rl with the otter or mink
:h li-avor is very slow swimmer. Hi
front legs hang by his aides, and he uses
o ily hi webbe hind feet for purposes
if swimming. I: Is easy to cfpture one
In a canoe If you can fin hlrn In shoal
water. He is a most determined fighter
but clumsy and ea-ay to handle. If he
could get h ild of you with his teeth he
would almost t ike a leg off so. you
want to w a'ch him sharp. The pi ice t
grab him is by the tall."
Of the ability of the beaver and some
other wild animals n l birds to remain
a long time under water this writer
says: ,
'The ability of a b-aver t re.nals
tin b r watr for x l-ing time is really not
i tough a problem as It looks. When
the lake or pond I frozen over the
beaver will come to the unler surface
of the lee and expel hi breath go that
it will form a wide, flat bubble. The
air coming la contact with the Ice and
water Is purine 1, and' the beaver
breiih" it in again. Thl operation he
can repeat several time. Th; ottr end
mukrat do the sortie thing.
"When the ice Is thin and clear I have
often seen the muskrat attached to his
bubble, and by pounding on the ice nave
driven him away from It. when'ne
would drown In very short time. I
believe the beaver, as well as the loon,
souietlmas employs this1 pneumatic fuc
tlon principle by breaihlng into the mud
on the bottom and thus remaining undtr
water for a remarkable length of uma."
That it is diflVul; to hold most of
the shyer fuf bearing animals In cap
tiv.ty is known to thos who have icaale
t ie exiieritnent. but the beaver evidently
take tthe lead In th'. respect In Mr.
Klt n's estimation as the following will
show:
"P almost t ik-'S a burglar-proof i afe
to h ,1.1 a newly captured beaver. I once
caught an old one an two kittens up
the north branch of the SouWest; put
them In a barrel an brought them
down to M.ram'.chl Lake. That night
She gniwed a hole through the barrel
mj cleared out. leivlng her kittens.
Th v were si young :hat I ha no way
of f ed.ng them, so reieaaed them in the
hpe that the mother might lln '.them.
S ion after that I caught a big male
h -av 'f. I made a large log pen for him
nf dry spiu.e, but the seconl night he
cut a lo, out and disippeired. .
'Beaver when alarmed gen;ral!y
make un stream, so I wnt up the brook
to where a little branch came in anl
I though: I woud go up that a little
way. nnl I hidn't tron.e more than un
reds More I ran across my la4 sitting
up in :v bed or the nrook having a
lunch on a s:lck he had cut. II? ac
tually looked as If he knew he was
ilaving truant when he caush sight of
nie out of the si le nf his ey '
"I picked him up by the tail and
brought Mm back, put him In the pn,
supplied liim with plenty of fresh pop
lar, and h seeme as tarn"' u possible.
I brought him out to Stanley where he
lived a long time. Turnbull had a tho
roughbred mongrel dog which was
Jealous of the beaver, an one day he
attacked him. He only did that rnce
for the beaver nipped the dog's 'ail off
nulcker'n a cat could catch a mouse.".
OPO WAYS OF MA KINO A LIVING.
Some Curlou Occupations That Men
Have Taken Up In New York.
New York Sun. . t
"About as odd an occupation as a man
could be tfigaged In," said a downtown
business man, "Is that of selling needle
threaders, und I have known but one
man to be engaged in that business.
I've seen him, day after day, and year
after year, standing in a busy down
town street, showing over and over
again how the threader works, and sell
ing threaders to passers-by. How many
years he's been at It I don't know; but,
If be will permit me to say so, he and
I have grown gray together, I plug
ging at my business, and he at his.
'Another odd calling for a steady oc
cupitlon is lhat of the man who sells
pipe cleaners. More than one man en
gages In this business.Aiocasionally; but
there is one man whose face has been
familiar for yeirs, .to thoustinds of
downtown business men who stands on
the sidewalk and sells pipe cleaner to
you the year 'round. '
"There's a man downtown who for
years and for quite a good many of
tt em, too, has bevn selling to sidewalk
pasaers-by, wo-foot rules, venture to
say that he Is the only man In the
world who mik-s a busln"i of Belling
two-fot rul'i in the street.
"And wh . of downtown New Torkf
doe not know, by sight at least, the
man who -na gartr? I don't mean
the man met now anl then with a
pushcart load of all sort of girtr, but
the man who for year, summer and
waiter the yar 'round, ha tood in
one plic-j la the clty' bual: thoroug
faii. anl syl garters of Just one sr,e.
clal kind to the pass-era-by."
