ly declared that he could not .uxept Dr.
Koch's conclusion on the evidence pre
sented. Hence, in spite of its startling
and gratifying character, the distingu
ished German's statement is not likelly
to exert much influence in the Immedi
ate future. In fact, entirely independ
ent testimony will be neded to corp
orate It. This is the rule regarding all
scientific discovery, whether it be the
finding of a new chemical element, a
new star or a new microbe. Of course,
now that the old view has been chal
lenged by the original discovery of the
tubercule bacillus, observation will be
freshly dlrectej to the Phenomen j.n In
dispute, although the point is no; one
that can be determine! casily. The
bacteriologist may with propriety inocu
late an animal with the grr.s of a
human disuse, and watch :h effect, but
a reversal of the procedure would not
be sanctioned by reputable Scientists.
