Daniels, general passenger aent of the New York Central said when this matter was called to his at tention: "We cannot help It. The national route to Buffalo from southern points say 'n Virginia and the Carolina la via Washington. It is a much more round about trip via New York City. We certainly canon change the topography of the country so as to make the flia tance via New York the same as over the dir.-ct line via Washington. We are now offering rates from New York to the Pan-American at Buffalo lower ' than evtr before and If merchants la the 9ouih or In other sections destro to come here, they . can reach New York by steamboal: or otherwise M th?n avail thenselves of the low rates to Buffalo from this city. As to the fact that most of these southern parties are prospective buyers, I may say that we have had a great many protests from all sections, Rochester, Utkw. Syracuse and other trade cen tan, aguinst the 'buyers' excursion. Jobbers of those places complain bit terly against the diversion to New York of trade that they naturally regarded as th?ir own. As to this immediate proposition we have done all we could do by giving low rates from New York. We could not be expected to grant as low a fare on a longer trip as is given on the shorter and direct route. Mer chants In Cincinnati would not go to the Pan-Amerlctn via New York City; the natural and direct route is via Cleveland. No more could we be ex pected to Uke traffic of southern port from the direct route via Washington. Of course there Is io International dis crimination against New York. All I can say Is that conditions are such that we cannot do more than we have done In the matter of reduced rates." HAVE YOU TRIED STATE NORMAL SCHOOL A. W.
