Yesterday after noon the police were called to arrest a suppospj burglar on A street. When they arrived they found the man had entered a nous by the rear window. The officers followed and when the stranger saw tbem approach he seized a board an I pounded It to splinters over their heads. Reinforcements were sent for. Cbi"f Fackler being left alon". the man sprang at him with a hammer but the latter dodged and Sergeant McCoy, who had just entered wrenched the hammer from his hand. A denpt-rate fight to put handcuffs on the man followed. The man was en dowed with Inhuman strength and snarled and growled at the men at tempting to overpower him. One of the man's arms had fallen free and a haid cuff was snapped. The other arm as doubled under his breast on the floor and In spite of the efforts of a halt a doxen men he could not be male to give up. Finally. Sergeant MeCoy managed to wrench the other arm out and the other cuff was fastened to his wrlat. When taken to the station It was dis covered that the stralnger ras a wild man who liad been on exhibition here and who had been locked out of his house. GREAT INTERTST EXHIBITED. NEW YORK, June lO.-The Tribune s London eorreap indent says: Among the members on both side of the house of commons the greatest Interest is exhibited in the report of the committee on reform 'n tbe war office administration and there is much eagerness for an opportunity to debate the recommendations. The committee has suggest-Jd several questions invit ing the government to name a day for discussion. It Is no doubt very difficult In the present backward condition of business for the government to find time for a new army debate but they will certainly be strongly pressed to dj so. as the subject is felt to be of more than ordinary Interest and importance. Advanced reformers among military members at parliament appear on the whole to approve the report cf the com mittee. Cal., who Is now staying In a Brook lyn hitl. arrived here Wednesday af ternoon with $23 .ind a check for $500. The city had changed so much since his last visit that he became completely be-wild-.Tid and lost. A detective was assigned to hunt for the old man's cash and check. The de tective easily found the first hotel Mr. Rathbone went to. but It was a long time before he found the second. At last the trail led 10 the Atlantic hotel In Brooklyn. The proprietor. Augustus Strauw. Imediately recognized Rathbone as a man who registered there last Wednesday and he left his baggage and valuables and disappeared next day. Strauss gave Rathbo.ie's belongings to the detective. Rathbone is a native of Provld ?nce, R. I. In 1852 he left there to go We3t. where he made his fortune. The Rosecrans Canmt Be Repaired Owing to Strike. saH TACOMA, June 10. The transport Rosecrans and the reveune cutter Bear were towed to the Puget sound naval station, Bremerton, yestetrday. The au thorities expect that work will proceed no faster at the naval station than It would at Sea-.tte or Tacoma, inasmuch as the machinists and bollermakers are expected to refuse to work. A delegate from the unions is vUidng the naval stations and will tndeavor to persuade the men to refuse to work on either vessel. ISSUE STILL EVADED. Government Will Not Pass on Destruc ion of the Maine. NEW YORK. June 10.-A speciat to the Tribune from Washington says the government will resist the proposition that the Spanish treaty claims commis sion should undertake consideration of the question of responsibility for the destruction of the battleship Maine In Havana harbor on February 13, 189S. that question being involved in a batch of claims wlileh have recently been pre sented to the committee, reciting dam ages for loss or life tthrough that dis aster. Tubbs, recently removed from the chair of natural sciences In the Weslcyan University for alleged heresy, said today: "I knew no'.hlng of the movement to oust tne until the thing was actually done. I am lot a heretic. I chal lenge any one to point out a single ut terance of mine that is In opposition to the doctrines of the Methodist church. "I am a constant believer In evolu tion as the method Thlch Gixl has em ployed to bring great things about m this world. I believe in the right of every man to inquire where the Bible came from, who wrote It and what Its purposes are." The orthodox and liberal elements of the Northwest Conference of the Metho dist church, apparently, are lining up for a struggle as the result of the dis missal of Professor Tubbs. It appears the trouble has been growing for more than a year and -he dismissal of Dr. Tubbs brought the crisis. SU CHIN'S CASE. Will Probably Be Allowed to Land as a Trader. SAN FRANCISCO. June 10. Collec tor of Port Stratton recommended to the treasury department today that Su Sh'.h Chin, the Chinese reformer and scholar, be allowed to land under sec tion six of the exclusion act, as a trader. The Chinese authorities of this coun try are very anxious to keep Su SWh Chin out of the country for political reasons. He Is a leader of the reform party which Is seeking to place Em peror Kwang Hsu on the throne Instead of the dowager empress. Pending the decision of the treasury department, Su Shlh Chin Is held In the detention shed at the Pacific Mail dock. Collector Stratton says that there is a reward of $50.or.o on his head and he has taken this means to protect him from assaults by any sympathizers of the dowager empress. DOING VERY NICELY. Mrs. McKinley Gaining Strength and Able to Sit Up. WASHINGTON. June lO.-Dr. Rixey when he left the White House at 10:15 tonight said: "Everything la encouraging. Mrs. Mc Kinley Is doing very nicely.
