There Is the vety best authority for
siving that all such inf ren??s are with
out any foundation whatever. The
president does not want any tariff
change now. and has not long ag. ex
pressed himself to that effect at a nnet
ing In the White House. So far as J
reciprocity Is concerned, his opinion cn j

was when he supported the reciprocity
provision In ihe McKlnley act of 1S90.
He frequently srok in favor of reci

The Republican party has always fa

on the dutiable list, as was the fuse at
one time, nearly half of the Imports are
now altogether free of duty. At the
same time there have been reductions
in rates on the dutiable articles. There

any action In the way of a revision of
the tariff In the existing congress. But

ouestionablv something will be done on

Some of the reciprocity .reaties sent

favor on the part of the president. He

In private conversation he is under
stood to have told som senator who
opposed that treaty that he bad not
r'me personally to investigate the rm'r-
of each article, but that he w-as in
fav.ir of a reciprocity treaty, and that
i? the tieaty was not acceptable to the
anite it should amend i: and make, it
acceptable, as It has done with other
treaties. He was oppose!, however, to
shelving ii as was done in the i?enate.
Still that was largely the result of
Democratic opposition to the shipping
and some other mjasures which led to
the consumption of so much time thai
