With Its habitual asininlty and Ir rlrability the Oregonian criticises a re cent editorial In this paper which was designed merely to call attention to the extraordinary pretensions made by Tacoma and to the disparity between the figures presented by the Tacoma News and those given by the Oregon Ian as the tonnage of the Portland Asiatic liners. The Oregon' an has be com so accumfomed to being constantly and lustly criticised that it sees an other attack In every reference to its sheet which Is not distinctly compli mentary. The attempt of the Oregonian to find fault with The Astorlan for our .comments upon a very "touchy" sub 1ect at a time when visitors from the East were visiting the state comes with very poor grace from that paper after Us brutal attacks upon President Mc- Kinley at a time when the serious 111 ness of his wife compelled him to halt In VI. rt: . -. TV.i-.ta n. I Vizi 11 vjirv ir ..Bit kJ wii'j. The dismissal of unruly cadets from "West Point is a good sign. The spirit of Insubordination has been In "Toung America" ever since the days of the revolution. The extraordinary lack of discipline In the army In China was much commented on by European of ficers. It is noteworthy that despite these criticisms, which were doubtless well-founded, the American troops bear a reputation for just dealing with the Chinese which Is second to that of no other military body. The spirit of freedom Is felt so fully nowhere else In the world as In America, It is the very excess- of this spirit which makes every American feel himself a king and inclined to assert his royal mroga tlves, quite often decidedly prematurely. As a nation we need to be taught that respect for authority and for law and righteous regulations whether of the borne, school or state is conducive to the highest liberty raither than destruc tive of It; SOME MEDICAL VIEWS ON SMOK ING METHODS. Brooklyn Standard Union.' Renewed Interest In the cigarette hab It has been caused by a recent article In the London Lancet, a medical Jour nal usually considered high authority, which declares cigarette smoking as the least harmful of the three methods of Lazy Livers ara many times tha eauaa of radons dinma Ninety per cant of the mertoan people are said to be troubled with lirer sml 'stomach complaint inch as constipation, dizxineaa. Com. 8t consuming tobacco, with the pipe next and the cigar last, or most injurious. The Lancet asserts that It ta not the nicotine that la the most harmful thin about smoking, at has long been be lleved, but pyridine and that as com ibustlon is more complete in the cigar ette than when the tobacco Is ignited In the bowl of a pipe or rolled In a cigar, there Is Ws Injury to the smoker. Py ridine !t associates with tobacco smoke rather than the weed Itself. This is a rather startling assertion and contrary to the long prevalent belief, anl the lancet finds ltvlf oppnM by the leading American authorities on the use of tobacco and by well-known alien ists. The records of asylums for the Insane and of sanitariums are also clearly against it. Thee show that thousands of men and boys, physical and mental wrecks from excessive cl rarett smoking, have found shelter therein, while others have died from that cause directly. A Manhattan pa per took the trouble to Interview a number of physicians in that borough on Sunday and none of them couli recall case within his experience of death resulting from cigar of pipe smoking. It Is now said that Gen. Grant's death was not due to smoking cigars. Dr. Spittk-a. the eminent alienist, who is an expert in narcotics, opposes the Lancet's theory, and asserts that the pipe Is the least injurious method of smoking. He holds that In moderation tobacco miy be sm'ked in any frm without injury, but that very few men can limit themselves to physical require ments. C'garettes. he says, are consum ed In great quantities by the youth of the land, and it is this excessive con sumption that causes havoc. He speci fies that cigarettes male of good to bacco ar not more harmful than ci gars, and that Is a point, for m-t clparetts are composed of some mys terious substances, or of tohioco so "treated" as to create an unhealthy ap petite for them. Another doctor, a di rector of a sanitarium, slid: "Cigar ettes do not arree with th Anelo-Sax-on. but pure tobacco, smoked as a cigar m- In a nine, is relatively harmless." and adds that the Turkish apparatus renders the habit harmless. This physi cian says that the Lancet draws a fine distinction between nicotine and pyrid ine, but that pyridine Is an elem-nt of nicotine, its ewence. in fact, end it would be as reasonable to distinguish between alcohol an J whiskey.
