THE UNION LABEL.
A Bililmore clergyman In a recent
sermon endorsed the union label In the
following eloquent words:
''What can be more sacred, more
holy, or more deserving of the rever-eni-e
of men or angels than 'he union
label, which signifies that human life
has been more highly valued In the pro
duction of commodities than the mere
profits sought for by yreed?
"The label Is an emblem of Justice,
of fraternity, of humanity. When yuu
find a label on a garment, or a box of
cigars, or a loaf of bread, or a piece of
tirintlng. you can be sure that neither
was made in a sweat-shop. That no
little children's fingers wer? compelled
to sew, or sort tobacco In the hours of
the night Intended for childish sleep.
When vou see this labd on any com
modity, you can buy It with, a clear con
science, knowing that In doing so you
ar? not becoming partner to an Insti
tutkm that degrades humanity for pri
vate profit. You can sleep soundly also,
and not be worried with thoughts of
typhus fever, smallpox or leprosy, which
are so often scattered broadcast from
Chinese opium Joints, penitentiary eon
vict.s' cells and tenement sweat-shops,
where the most degraded specimens of
humanity put their life's blood Into
marketable goods, from which the poor,
unsusj-ecting public suffers all manner
of foul and loathsome diseases.
-The union label is a religious em
blem. It Is a religious act to buy goods

SPITTING ON THE SIDEWALKS.
ASTORIA, Ore.. March 23. Editor
AstorianJ -It seems lo im that our city
officers hHVe forgotten that we have a
law forbidding spitting on the slde
wa,k. But we have such a law and
am sur- that It was made a law
oei-ajite th; people wanted It. And I
b"lvi. too, that thn people now want
inat law - nforcd and expect It to be
enforced by the otfl(-er who are placed
in p..siijon for that purpose. This Is
in ni of prngre?s and of knowledge.
Yet th th are a few who defy all law
or elso t.ret-nd that they did not know
there was harm in the spit, or do not
believe such "nonsense," as they call
It. as that there are microbes In the
