When MtKlnley reads of the extraor dlnary precautions being lakn to pre serve the cxar from assassination he will probably abandon his ambitious plans for assuming the royal purple. There will e little weeping In this country at the emigration of a few thousands of Mormons to Mexico. The church has not abandoned polygeny and that fact means constant friction between the ihurch orgajiizatlon and membership and the Christian element of our nation as long as the Mormons remain among us. The Southern Pacific Company is en deavoring to create a strong public sen timent in behalf of the preservation of the treat trees of California. These monsters of the forest, many of them over four hundred feet In height and one hundred fett in circumference, are declared by President David Starr Jor dan, of Leland Stanford, Jr., University, to be at least eight thousand years old, antedating the pyramids of Egypt. These imposing relics of past ages should certainly be preserved from dese cration and destruction. The Mariposa grove, containing about seven hundred trees, has been granted government pro tection but It includes but a small proportion of these monarehs of the forest. Should the despoiler be per mitted to ruthlessly destroy at will the remainder of them, the state of Cali fornia and the nation at large will be robbed of a treasure which can nev er be measured In dollars and cents and can never be replaced. NEGLECTED BY CONGRESS. Salt Lake Tribune. The fifty-sixth congress has finished Us work. U gave to the country much .wise legislation and some foolish; it re fused to do some necessary things. One was the refusal to make any appropri ation for building reservoirs In the arid rKior. The refusal was due to ignor ance. . Were ther? some island out in the sea Containing tens of millions of fertile acres, but surrounded by a coral reef so that only the smaller schooners could approach it, the Fifty-sixth ' congress would not have hesitated for a moment to make a sufficient appropriation to blast away the re-f that the products of the rare island might be made avail able. In a kind of ecstacy members would have pictured how many beauti ful homes might be created on the won derful island, what Its annual products would b? worth, etc. But when the Islands and coral re-f are on our own continent, th.-n it 13 different, and grave congressional asses will stand up and ask why the government should Interpose to create something which is cUhed from the stomach not beginning itf work immediately. Until it getrto work you fuel d s-trcsed-tlie food lays iu your stor? ach like a weight. To start digwttion to make th stomacJi do its work yon miu,t anist it it rour stomach Is weak or alow to work. (00-2 Com. 8L Distress after eating would tend to drain "other states of thvlr D'Hiple. 4 The soaeoast cities, through. ' their press, every on? clamor for harbor Im provements, they declare that the whole country is interested Ixvatise of the general Interest In rommoive- and the need of drawing eveny possibility to Its advantage. We of the West accept that, though we know the reason New York wants a better channel front the piers to the sea is to svuro freight that otherwise might go to Philidel phla or Baltimore; that Philadelphia wants a better channel in order to draw freight from Baltimore and New York, and that Baltimore and Boston both want improvements that th y may suc cessfully compete with the E.npiiv and Quaker cities. Again, every year ther l a drain of $10,000,000 to improve the na igntion and save the banks of the Mississippi river. That is all right, but the ex penditure in the arid tvlt of as much money as Is poured annually into the rat-ho!e of the Mississippi, would add 30,000 to the homes of the land and give each one 100 acres of l.wd as rich as any In the Mississippi valley. There are other r.asons that ought to govern In this connection. The East-, ern states boast of the value of their farm products. They are very great, but thty are only ab.'Ut 4" per cent of what they should be wiih ra;!y in lightened cultivation. In Genesis we are told that the waters hid to be di vided before the dry land appeared. Ever since th'n moisture is to land what the air is to a human b-ing. Without the air man's life c'ases; with out the n.oisiure the whole earth would be but the corpse of a world. The science of applying water to land to pnduct the best yield is n science which our Eastern friends have never graduated in. and they should pursue the study foi it is directly to trior in terest that they should understand it. Their thlh'rrn hfty years heme will r-e lauciung that thnr fathers i?rj such chumps. When Irrigation becomes general, in ihe arid b-lt. it will xienl ..inward, r-i the study of hlw .ivolj i.verfio. in time of freshet and how to support their crops in time of drought will be an all-important one to farmers. They ought to begin Its study- now. Finally, there is another conside ration that ought to have had some ueigh with congress. In the last half century the arid West has sent east $4.000.'rt,000 in imperishable money. It has vluliz-.d all thi great East; it has g.ven them a full addition of 30 per c-ni to their prop erty; it aids today 30 per cent to ail they possess. That fact ought to have given a little emphasis to the petition of the West. WITH THE PARAGRAPHIAS. T... . . I . ..... . . x-ei'.igitw- ieu tne s -na;e with 5,'cn the contempt of Pitchfork Tillman.
