MERCHANTS' TRADE EDITION.
The following Is reprinted from the
Budget of yesterday:
Merchants who have been solicited
to support the proposed "spfclul trade
edition" to be issued by the Morning
Astorlan, should consider very carefully
the benefits to be d rived from it. It is
the same old gold brick every alleged
newspaper like the Astorlan trk-s to sell
in the absence of regular and legitimate
patronage from Us columns. Better put

for all the good the "special trade edi
tion" will do. Nobody reads such edi
tions, nobody care's for them, excepting
a few simple tidvertislng Likirs who lie
awake at night planning sehem?s to
systematically beat the public.
The Jacts are th.se. The Astorian
proposes to issue in the near future a
special edition setting forth tjie re
sources and industries of Astoria and
of Clatsop county. Advertising spice
will br offered local merchants upon a
basis of a guaranteed circulation of
300 copies. The tenor of the edition
will be to boom Astoria. The advertis
ing rates are ot exorbitant and
no payment is asked until the edition
is brought out and the promises here
in made fulfilled. The merchants of
the city or any individual advertiser
will be furnished proof that the clrcu-;
lation promises have been complied
with. The Merchants' Trade Edition j
will live up to statements already made
as to its scope and purposes and the
unfavorable comment of the Budget is
without reason for Its publication.
THE BUSINESS SITUATION.
' The notable absence of hard times
talk In Astoria Is a matter of much con
gratulation. While the calamity howler
may not have entirely disappeared, It is
aulte an&arent that no class of people
excent the unfortunate land poor and
those who have taken too grfat chances
in real estate ?pecula:ions have now any
real rouse for complaint. Comparison
(' the pr-sent with "the good old boom

reason as well.

COMMERCE ON THE PACIFIC.
Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
In a bulletin taking a general survey
of the foreign trade of the country, re
cently issued by the state department,
which was compiled by Frederick Em
ory, chief of the bureau of foreign trade,
the growth of cninnioe on the Pacific
Is referred to at considerable length.
It is the conclusion of the writer that
tha d.jvelopm?nt of transportation fa
cilities Is one of the leading if not the
most important item in the growth of
foreign trade, and the foots which he
deduces 'seem to bear this out. In the
absence of gnl transportation facili
ties with Brazil, for example, this coun
try ranks but sixth In the volume of
its exports to that country", being led
by countries with whom the United
States Is eniblcd to successfully com
pete xn their own home markets, but
which have better transportation facil
ities to Brazil than this country pos
sesses. It is observed: "Conspicuous illustra
tions of the benefit of direct transporta
tion and of the fact that increased trade
follows lis establishment are found in
the recent growth in the export of Amer
ican products to such unlikely quarters
as Tu:l;.y and Peru. Some two years
ag0 tne consul-general at Constantl-
noole. Mr. Dickinson, exerted himself
to secure the running of a direct line
of steamers between the United States
and Turkish ports on the Mediterran
ean. The Barber line of New York de
cided to make the experiment, and the
service, b-gun In February. 1399, has
jrreatly stimulated the sale of Ameri
can products in the Levant.
Enlarged transportation facilities un
doubtedly account to a considerable ex
tent for the steady growth of our com-m-rce
with Japan."
The latter statem-nt is absolutely cor
rect, a? experi.-nce her- has shown.
Since the establishment t th first di
rect line or steamers fnm S-attle to
Oriental points a trade which did not
exist b-fore has been creat-d, and has
grown to such proportions that sev
eral more transportation lines have
come into the field to shar- in its car
rying: and the growth of the trade
The report calls especial attention to
the Inivr n-ement of transportation fa
cilities from this port, to the establish
ment of the Oriental steamship line be
tween Seattle and Manila, to the line of
the China Mutual Steamship Company,
lust established, and to th- magnificent
Meet now building for the Great North
ern, and which is to ply in this trade,
and further remarks: "The Pacific slope
Is being rapidly converted from a mere
outpost of trad- inro a gr-at hive of
commere." The figures iriv-n in a foot
note show that exports from this coaiit.
which in amounted to but J38,80O,-
U00, arose in 1W) to J71,6"0,')O0 (years
en-d June '')).
It is observed that th- "growth of
F:-a-borne commerce at these points
means much for the great extent of the
country tributary to them and promises
to work marked changes in th- Indus
trial condition of the vast regions west
of the Rocky mountains."
All of the recent literature upon the
subject of the extension of the Pacific
commerce but emphasizes the necessity
of the building of American ships In
which to handle It, that in this manner
the fullest amount of value may' be re
alized to the country from the trade
which It is developing. Dependent as
we are upon foreign ships for our trans
portation facilities, there ia the ever
present risk of a complete destruction
of that trade by the occurrence of con
ditions which would prevent the utili-
zation of those foreien blr, tn iw

trade. That this Ls not a remote con
tinerencv experience within the past
year has shown. The withdrawal of
such a large amount of tonnage for
transport service to South Africa and
the Philippines ha resulted In placing
heivy additional burdens upon com
merce In the Pacific, by reason of ad
vanced charters, and the shoituge of
tonnage has teen such that In this city
alone our exporters have been unable,
in some instances, to fill "existing or
ders. No steamer for' the Orient has de
parted wjfhout a full cargo, and without
Having freight on the docks for which
she was unable to And. room. A Euro
pean war, involving any twv of the mar
itime powers of the first class, would
result In the immediate withdrawal
front our trade of the vessels which now
carry our exports, and the consilient
destruction of our commerce. Tile only
safety for the permanence of the tride
of the Payltlc pons with Asia Is the
building of American steunishlps to car
