Baker City Democrat.
Bearing the cold name of Oxero
Lewis, a lady of Marklevllle, Indiana,
has outdone Carrie Nation. Carrie's
fystem of putting saloons out of busl
nets may be all right in Kansas, but
It won't work In other states. Mrs.
Lewis' scheme will work anywhere and
to perfection. The other night old
man O-iero Lewis forgot to come home
at the proper hour, and so old lady
O-iero Lewis went out looking for
him. He was found in a saloon seated
at a table with a number of other men
drinking beer. Now Mrs. O-z-ro didn't
rrab an ax and rake a fall out of the
Ice box. neither did she dynamite the
mirror behind the bar. but instead,
walking up to the man who gave her
the chilly name, she took him by the
ear, and walking back to a good strong
thalr. sat down with the old man across
her lap and there administered a first
elass sp.mk'ng. Other women were
with her to see how the scheme worked,
and so pleased were they that their
husbands were led out of the saloon
by the cars.
There Is much mrit in this scheme.
It Is far superior to Mrs. Nation's idea,
which is rule. That of Mrs. Lewis is
truly refined. Husbands will not go to
a saloon and drink cheap be?r if they
expect any nionvnt rhe entrance of
their wives, who will, forthwith, in
front of all there assembled, spank
them. F-iv men like to be spanked
by their wives in public places. It Is
not so much the pain as the humilia
tion. Carri" d'es not 9trike at the root
of the evil. Mrs. Lewis does. Carrie
la too flighty in her ways. Mrs. Lewis
Is cool, deliberate arid mode?t. For
these reasons we believe that Mrs.
Lewis' scheme of eloping saloons
should be approved and commended
in every section.

caption throws new light upon the
character of our president, jvaylng par

"astounding Han in delusion." Mr. Me

'Nothing llluxlratt the popuni.- mis

than the astounding d.luixi, enter
tained by some Republlcuns as well as

up. in a way that U .iJ unjust as It is
picture pa- ail the notions to the ef

and unstable person, without convic
tions, or even opinions, that cannot be
change ! at the command of a stronger
man. Newspaper cartoons, which now
have moie iniUi -nee than newspaper
editorial, are lamely responsible for
these straiue bdi.fs. but they have
be- n fostered by uninf, miexl editors nid
politicians misled by deceptive appear

see how ignorance alone misleads writ

they have only soen his manner in pub

time, it was very natural that he should
consider it entitled to its full constitu
tional powers and duties, and to the
most respectful consideration on a pl'ine
of absolute equality with the president
of the United States. Mr. Garfield was
the only president of our time, except
Mr. MeKinley, who came to the White
Houfe after such an rxperunee at the
capitol, and hr had pr"ii.--ly the same
theory of relations lie t ween the presi
dent and congress. According t1 this
theory congress ought not to dominate
the president, the pr-skl-nt ought not to
dominate congress, but they should
co-cnerate as far as practicable f"r the
good of the country.
"President MeKinley had the point of
view of cvngi ss before he took the
point of view of th" president. He
knows that congress, collectively, is as
wise, as patriotic and as representative
of the people as he is. and that, indi
vidually, th-re may b- men in both
houses who would b; able to tak his
place at short notice, without dtrirn-nt
to the country. He r-nvmb-rs. too,
