' Three of the large vessels, the steim ships City of Sydney. Peru and City of Para, of the splendid fleet which the Pacific Mall Steamship Company hat been operating between Fan Francisco and Panama, have been secured for the Nome trade by the Pacific Clipper Line. They are to b operated txclu slvely between Seattle and Nome. The Sydney, Peru and Para will be the largest vessels ever seen In the Alas ka trade. The Sydney Is ?53 feet long with 3017 gross tonnage. She Is cap able of carrying 700 passengers, S00 first class and 400 second class, and 3000 tons of cargo. The Peru and Para are sis ter ships, of 3532 tons gross capacity. They will carry each 700 pasvngers and from 3000 to 3500 tons of cargo.' The appearance here Sautrday after noon of the Infant musicians, Paloma and Katia Schram, wilt doubtless draw a good attendance of Astoria's music loving population. These child artists enjoy a reputation that is national, having played to large audiences in all the cities of the country, and are at present making a tour under the man agement of their father. Their reper toire Is large, and Includes many of the classic productions of Beethoven, Bach, Llrt, Chopin and Rubensteln. They come here under the auspices of the Woman's Club, and It Is to be hoped they will, be greeted with a good au dience. The performance will be' at Hanthorn hall, at 2:30 p. m. Admis sion, 50 cents; children under twelve, 23 cents. An old-fashioned rabbit drive will be held on Blalock Island, In the Columbia river, on March 5, in which It Is esti mated more than 400 people will parti cipate. Th? Island Is owned by a com pany which Is putting It under culti vation and which Is dejlrous of get ting rid of a large number of the fris ky and destructive rabbits. The Island is six miles long and from one to three miles In width and is adapted for all kinds of croiw. T .j company has put 300 acres In an orchard and has nearly 1000 acres altogether ready for culti vation this year, the power of the Co lumbia river being usod to operate an Irrigation plant. It is intended to make the whole Island productive, but be fore continuing the work It has been deemed advisable to exterminate the Jackrabbits, cottontails and coyotes which abound on the place. It a debated at length, and although even it opponents admitted It had good points, it was defeated by a vote of 31 to 22. The other railroad bill disposed of, and which met a slm'l.ir fate, was the bill of Harris to fix the liability of rail road corporation for Injuries. But 19 votes were ca;U In favor of this bill. By the disposition of th'-n bills oil meas ur: k affecting the Interests of railway corporations are wiped off the slate. The only othr measure tak-n up and disposed of In the house up to noon was the bill by Harris to make the removal of mining . nation mark.i a crime. This was passed without oppo sition. The bill to prohibit Sunday shaving yesterday becime a law without the .signature of the governor, and there will be no sh.ivln? or hair cuts In Ore gon next Sunday. This will be a severe blow to those v ho neglect to trim up for church Saturday nights, but it will prove a boon to the barbers, who will be free to go fishing, attend church or do whatsoever their wish-.-s may incline them. In the senate yesterday morning Hurt Introduced a hill regulating fares on fctrett railways In titles of 50,000. The same wus read three times and passed. The big dealers claim that some of the smaller manufacturers have violat ed faith and, in certain instances, cut under the price as fixed by the general agreement. Whether the smaJler mak ers have actually violated faith or not means but little to them now that the war has been declared. The big fellows have made the charge and taken the settling of it into their own hands. The price has been cut so deep that it will be impossible for all of the smaller companies to' survive and It may be possible .that none of them can remain In business under the effects of such a slash. One of them is already closed down, it is claimed.
