MANY BUILDING PROJECTS. A recent Issue of the Penikton East Orcgonlan contains an account of what Is being done In that and other coiiit cltlej, to erect Y. M C. A. build ings. All of the cities mentioned, with possibly one exception, are waller than AatorU. , What they are doing Asto ria can do. The East Oregonian says: Although the work of the Yourg Men's Christian Association is weaker, on the Pacific coast than in any other section of our country, even here It is coming to be recognized ns one of the eolldeat and most useful Institutions of society. These associations own prop erty in these Pacific coast cities valued at over $i17,000 and some very fine buildings are In smalt places. At Red land, Cal., a place of only 5000 popula tion, the association owns a building worth $32,000. While this Is somewhat abovi the average there Is coming to be a general appreciation of the value and necessity of the work done In these modern association buildings. At Salem they are now engaged In a canvass to build a $10,000 home for the association. In Oregon City they have a $5000 building and are now making plans to Improve it so as to' make the work more effective, the mill and manufac turing Institutions of the city giving liberal support, recognizing the vttlue t-f the work In making better mn. At Everett,, Wash., the contract has been let for a $5000 building for the assciation. Over at Boise, Ida., plans are being drawn for a building to cost $W.0W to $15,009. These instances show that Pendleton iu comparison with other places Is at tempting nothing urusual in raising $0000 for a Y. M. C. A. building. Th,e committees having In charge the raising of the funds are making good progress, about $400 more being secured on Saturday, but as there still lacks about $1200 of the amount needed and as it must all be subscribed by Friday night of this week, the citizens inter ested should respond readily when seen by the committee. lathers Is being broken down. It did not nwan anything of murderous vlmltctlwness, but It nevertheless has an ominous sound. Of late years the American peo ple in many states, and some of the.n the best ordered in the union, have shown a mad tendency to commit the most outrageous offenses under sudden Impulses of violence. It la clear from the.e experiences that one of these dangers against which we must guard most carefully Is that of a hysterical mob. When In the midst of a street affray the cry goo up t. kill, It Is time to call a halt. It may be that the laws regulating the sale of liquor in Kansas are not rightly enforced. It nlliy be that great evils result from the negligence of the officials. It may be that Mrs. Na tion is working In a good cause and that lur teal is one lorn of a high motive. Nevertheless. sJie has reached the danger point In her crusade, and It Is time to stop. The men and women who are most earnest In the cause of temperance would do well to calm the Kansas crusader.
