FIFTEEN KILLED AT COLUMBIA.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.. Nov. 21. A
ep-ial to the Age-Herald by long dis
tance telephone from Columbia, Tenn..
says:
A terrlrTic cyclone movtng in a west
erly and northwesterly direction struck
this place at 9:30 o'clock last night and
left havoc In Its path. The northern
and western streets of the city, which
are populated principally by negroes,
were almost entirely swept away. Fif
teen persons are known to have been
killed and it Is feared that thla num
ber will be largely Increased by later
reports.
The. dead are: Misses Florence and
Evelyn Farrell. Captain Aydolette,
wife and son. Another son and daugh
ter sre missing. Miss Kate Forsythe.
James Cherry and six negroes, names
unknown.
The cyclone lasted for about five min
utes and Its path extended about one
thousand feet wide, which Is clearly
marked by devastation. Many houses.
Including a large number of negro cab
ins, were blown down and others un
roofed and otherwise damaged. The
surrounding fences of the United States
armmiU were blown away, but the
building remains intact.

HONOLULU. Nov. 14. Honolulu and
the Hawaiian islands have Just b-vn

that they have exiierienced for years.
The weather bureau says that it was
the end of a marine cyclone and that
thy storm was making Its way to the
Pacific coast.
DAMAGE IN CALIFORNIA.
SAX FRANCISCO. Nov. 21. For sev
eral hours b day the city was entire
ly cut off from telegraphic communica
tion on account of the heavy wind and
rain storm of last night. Reports from
different sections of the state show
that the storm center was between San
Francisco and Sacramento thence a uth
to Frewio. In the Sacramento valley
the wind reached a velocity of 45 miles
per hour. In this city the wind blew
at the rate of 42 miles an hour but at
Point Lobos the Instrument of th
Merchants' Exchange waa blown down
after recording 70 miles.
Towards daylight the fury of the
storm abated.
The damage so far aa reported was
of a minor rharavcter .and waa confined
chiefly to the destruction of treea and
fencea and small building.

SOUTHAMPTON. Nov. 21.-The Red
Star steamer Frieslaml. Captain Nick

and she was taken in tow by the tugs

Thu Frlesland's rudder stock broke
November 15. The weather was stormy

helpless for nearly twenty-four hours
until the steam ?r Cluden took her in
low and brought her to within ten mileB
of the needles, whare she was taken
in hand by two Southampton tugs. As
the Cluden steamed off. her great ser
vices were recognised by loud cheers
from the passengers.

received here tonight of the holding up
of the Iron Mountain cannon ball pas
senger train, bound north, at Gifford.
Ark., a few miles this aide of Malver
ton Junction, at 7:30 o'clock by a half
dozen men.
The bandit had built a huge bonfire
on the track but the engineer, scent
ing an attempted robbery, opened the
throttle and sought to push through the
fiery obstruction. Several ties caught
In the pilot and soon brought the train
to a stop.
Instantly thre masked men ordered
the engineer and fireman to leave the
engine. Another rubb;r ordered the
conductor to remain inside. Each or
der was obeyed.
While four robber were standing
guard and occaaicnally fir ng a shot
to frighten the passenger, their two
accomplices entered the expreu car
and held up Messenger Samuel R. Av
ery. The large aafe waa charged five
ti'iiea with dynamite, each explosion
tearing off portions of the car but
an entrant-. could not be effected.
Messenger Avery was severely injured.
The robbers finally announced that
they had no more dynamite and gave
up the task of forcing the door open.
Picking up the express box and aev-
eral packages they ran to their hows
and rode speedily away. The express
box contained about J-"00.
