The deeper Germany gets Into the mire over her Chinese policy the more will the American nation congratulate Hself upon Its wise and conservative leaders. Tho spectacle of the British govern ment shaping Its foreign policy upon lines laid down by the United States never was seen In the good old Demo cratic days. Canada Is to receive an Influx of seven thousand subjects of the peace loving ciar. who have been driven from Russia by persecution on account of their religious views. The policy of demanding from China ihe surrender of her citizens to for eign powers for punishment will set a dangerous precedent likely to recoil at sime future time upon the nation which now presents It. No one believes that Mr. Bryan fav ored the brutal assault of the mob of Colorado Democrats upon Governor Roosevelt It was too striking an ex ample of the result of the good old Democratic doctrine of the righteous ness of popular disregard and disre spect for law and order. The last Issue of Finance contains an instructive article by J. A. Joseph on the financial status of our country. It 6hows how since the close of the civil war and the "crime of "3" of which we hear so little during the present campaign our position has been entire ly reversed. Then we were a great debtor nation, ar.d our bonds had been selling at London for fifty cents on the dollar. Now we are the creditor nation of the world, and the richest people In existence, and the movement during the present administration has been steadily upward. Mr. Joseph paints a glowing picture of the out look for the future. Incidentally re marking that "only the game of poli tics keeps the bed of speculation un der a wet blanket." The danger of a reversal of the present upward finan cial tendency by a return to the party rule and policies of the Democracy can not be too often reiterated and 1m . pressed upon the mind of every voter. The real issue Is the Issue of pros perity. We know we enjoy prosperity, we know how we got it and we know how we can keep it. Shall we or fhall we not render futile that knowledge for the sake of placing Aguinaldo In a position to massacre all the Filipinos who have shown themselves friendly to us? TRUSTS FROM THE STANDPOINT i ,. OF LABOR. ' , D. F, Kennedy,, organizer of the American Federation of Labor, has Is sued In pamphlet form a thoughtful paper upon the trusts as viewed from the standpoint of organized labor. Mr. Bryan and other office-seeking cham pions of the oppressed would do well to show an array of argument against the trusts which could compare with their defense by Mr. Kennedy, either In cogency of reasoning or accuracy of statement. Mr. Kennedy believes that the trust is the inevitable result of Industrial evolution and, like all other forms of progress, Is destined to bless the race. "While all progress brings destruction ot the weak and inefficient who stick to the ancient ruts, the greater good to the many Is the paramount considera tion. He does not contend that trusts are organized front philanthropic motive, any more than were the Invention of Edison put upon the market for any other purpose than his own advantage, but that the higher Jaw which governs all makes even the eelflshre.es of Indi viduals contribute to the public weal. The trust brings atout scientific pro duction, or the maximum of product from the minimum of effort and ex pense. It arrives at the goal for which competition, so much lauded, strives comparatively In vain the cheap pro duction and sale of goods. Mr. Ken r.tdy considers competition "most re lentless and heartless," the cause of many a cut In wages and of the clos ing of many a factory and consequent Idleness of It employes. He says, fur thermore: "Competitive production haa always resulted In glutted markets at one time with losses to those that handle the goods during the slump In prices. At other times there Is a shortage In pro duction. Then the consumer suffers as a result of high prices. What Is need ed most Is fair prices and stability. These can not be had through com petitive production. We must all con cede that trust production and dis tribution can maintain a low price and make that rrlce uniform and sta ble." As an example of the possibilities of aggregate production, Mr. Kennedy cites the much-defamed Standard Oil trust. While In many branches of com petitive Industry wages have been low ered, this great organization, through Its very Immensity, has been enabled to recently raise the wages of Its army of employes ten per cent, has Improved the Quality of Its oil and reduced the wholesale price from 23 to 8 cents per gallon In eighteen years. Mr. Kennedy concludes that "trusts and trades unions are the best example of the triumph of mind over its en vironment." and that the. kind of legis lation required In dealing with the trust question Is regulative and not restrictive. "I had a running sore on my leg for seven years." writes Mrs. J as. Forest, of Cheppewa. Falls, Wis., "and spent hundreds of dollars In trying to get it healed. Two boxes of Banner Salve entirely cured it." CHAS. ROGERS. Druggist It Is always considered unlucky to get married on Friday or usually on any other day.
