Chicago Times-Herald. So Professor Frederick Starr of the department of anthropology at the Uni versity of Chicago thinks that the American people will eventually revert to the aboriginal Indians. He does not Inform us whether he regards this as a paramount prospect or an Immediate menace. But his theory is that racial differences are due to physical and climatic conditions, and that if we only live long enough under the same con ditions that made the original Inhabit ants of thie continent Indians we will take or the straight black hair, high cheek hones, small eyes and copper skins that constitute their distinctive physical charms. Professor Starr professes to base bis theory on careful Investigations. He has measured the features of some 6,000 children of Pennsylvania Dutch parentage and has found a lengthening of the face and a broadening of the cheek bones "In accordance with the characteristic features of the Indian j aces." With all due respect to Professor Starr we are Inclined to the belief that the ancestors of these Pennsylvania Dutch children for generations and cen turies before they came to America had as high cheek bones as ever graced the swarthy countenance of the Ameri can Indian. Prints of the faces of the early Dutch settlers all show a fine development of the cheek bone. There are Immigrants landing on our shores today from central Europe who have as long faces and as high cheek bones as any typical Indian. The Hebrew face, from whatsoever quarter of the globe it hails, has great er length than that of the American Indian. It has undergone no change under differing physical and climatic conditions through more than twenty centuries. So 'It is asking too much of our innocent credully to ask us to credit a change In facial characteristics Reecham's piiisl CURESIOK HEAD AO US and act like tnagte on a weak atomtch and disordered liver, 10 tuuul 28 cents, t all drug Mans, in" the less than three centuries the Dutch have been In Pennsylvania. Professor Starr thinks that each con tinent has Its type to which Its Inhabi tants must eventually converse". "Asia," he savs. "Is the land of the brown and the yellow. Africa Is the black man's continent. The whit man who goes to Africa must In time become black, with the projecting Jaw, the coarse hair and backward heel of the native African races," All of which may be so, but It Is not proven by anything within the lim its of approve! scientific observation. Tho Esyptlan and the Ethiopian have lived together und.T the same physical and cllmstle conditions for centuries back to the glimmering days of re corded history and they have not con verge 1. They are as distinct now, ex cept where th.?y have Intermingled, as in the days of the Pharaohs. Such changes as are wrought In racial characteristics bv change of habitat are so slow as to be almost inappreciable In the passing of centuries. The In habitants of America are undergoing rapid changes that have nothing what ever to do with the .iltered natural and climatic conditions of the country. which Is changing under ihelr ceaseless activity far more rapidly than they. In temperament they are growing away from not toward the calm, stoical nature of the American Indian. Their voices are pot taking on either the soft cadencee or the deep gutturals of the Indians. Their eyes are getting bolder and less cunning than the Indian's. Their skins are getting whiter perhaps It Is the soap their hair lighter perhaps It Is the bleach than the aboriginal pos sessor of this fair 'and.
