Por President WILLIAM M'KINLEY, Of Ohio. Por Vice-President THEODORE ROOSEVELT, Of Xcw YorK. THRICE HAPPY SEATTLE! The New York Commercial finds an ulterior motive in Seattle's fulsome flattery of President Hill, of the Great . Northern, and pokes fUn at a recent ar ticle in the Seattle Times, in the fol lowing language: 'There are eleven separate and dis tinct reasons why, in the opinion of the Seattle Times. President James J. Hill, of the Great Northern railroad. 'Is the greatest railroad magnate from the standpoint of construction, manage ment and productive outcome that the world has ever known.' , These rea sons are all double-leaded In wide edi torial measure and properly sized up in a recent issue of the Times, and they present a decidedly imposing appear ance. But in their last analysis they really comprehend only the single prop osition that, while 'the future success and greatness' of Seattle were 'tremb ling in the balance, the great Hill had It In his power to 'make or wreck' that future and wisely chose to 'make' It that is. he named Seattle as the ocean terminus of his great lake, railway, ocean and Oriental transportation sys tem. In short, James J. Hill deftly killed two birds with one stone made himself great in a minute and In that minute assured the 'future greatness' of Seattle. "Had his final choice of a terminus been Everett, the competing port, it is fair to presume that Hill would now be a nonentity and Seattle w ould be per manently 'off the map,' without a fu ture of any sort. 'Unfortunate Everett! Thrice happy Seattle'" , ENEMIES TO CIVILIZATION. Victoria Colonist Th- Democratic party of the United States, placed in its platform a declara tion against the British policy in South Afrloa, and it is holding out induce ments to the Boers to pre'ons their re sistance until after Bryan comes into power. The Democratic candidate. In a speech at Auburn, Neb., a few days ago, said: "I want the American flag to come down from the Philippines In or der that the flag of a republic may rise in ita place." Inspired by the belief that Bryan means what he said on this subject In previous speeches, which is similar to his Auburn utterance, the Lazy Livers are many times the cause of various d aeaaes. Ninety por cent of the American ieupf are said to be troubled with liver an i utoinach complaints such as constipation, dizziness, indignation, biliuusuesa, aluggith liver, etc. Baldwin's Health Tablets No. 25 overcome and core these 01a These tablets act aa a gentle laxa tive. TLhv riiiia tha liver and I stomach do their duty aa they should. The most obstinate case yield to these little tablets. They oat 2oo and can be procured at FRANK HART. Successor to Th. Olsen, 800-1 Com. St Filipino have Issued a manifesto call ing upon every man to resist the army of the United States until Bryan shall be elected. Thus Bryan and the Dem ocracy are standing for the oligarchy of the Toers and the ninke-believe re public of the Filipinos, both of which systems sre foreign to the principle of clvllUatlon. That the people of the United States will elect a president who pretends that he will recall their troops from the Philippines, and. If need be. then send them to South Af rica, we do not for a moment believe. The duty of Great Britain In South Africa and the duty of the United States In the Philippines is the same. It is to give those several countries the benefit of an enlightened and civilised governmert. Sensible people in the United States know perfectly well that British government in South Africa moar.s free government, under which every one will be treated alike. They know that the government that will be set up under the Stars and Stripes In the Phl'ippines will be of the same na ture. They know tint both the Union Jack and the Star Spangled Banner stand for clvllUatlon, and yet they haul down the one in South Africa and the other in the Philippines. But neith it flag w ill come down. Both have been planted over the graves of brave men. and there they will long wave in spite of all the enemies of clvllUatlon can do. UNDERSTANDS THE SITUATION. The following editorial from the For est Grove Times shows that the wheat raising communities of Oregon ar waking up to the Injustice put upon them by the present methods of ship ping their grain: "Speaking of prices for wheat, it is the contention of the good people of Astoria that If that port had a common point rate, that Is, if wheat could be laid down there as cheap as at Portland, the difference in the price there and at San Francisco ought not to exceed 50 cents per ton In any event. And this Is the process of reasoning by which the conclusion Is reached: But few grain carrying ships are of less than 3000 tons capacity. To tow a vessel from San Francisco to Astoria costs JlaoO. or 50 cents per ton on a cargo of 3000 tons. Ergo, whatever the San Francisco price for wheat exceeds the Portland price in excess of DO cents per ton, that represents the cost of tak ing ships from Astoria to Portland and back to Astoria. "Whatever there may by In this con tention, it is a fact that the cost of sailing a ship from a foreign port to Astoria, or from there, laden, to her destination. Is but little, If any. more than the cost to and from the port of an Francisco., The price of wheat. then, should be practically the same at Astoria as at San Francisco; and as every added cent or cost in getting wheat to market reduces the price by j so much to the producer, the subject Is worth inquiring into. 'If wheat can be shipped from Ore gon to California ana resnipped as California wheat at a profit, there is something wrong somewhere, and the Oregon farmer Is not getting what he is Justly entitled to." That is Astoria's contention exactly. Under no ordinary condition, with As toria as the wheat-shipping port of Oregon, should the market price of wheat at Astoria be over 1 1-3 cents per bushel, or 50 cents per ton, less than the market price in San Francisco on the same day. .
