Texas lias awakened to a sense of
her honor and dignity, and set the
whole South an example by convicting
three men for participating In a "lynch
Ingbee." They have all been sentenced
to life imprisonment, and hereafter
these acts of lawlessness will be de
prived of their Jocose quality in Texas.
The very nature of a lynching tends
to prevent the law from being executed
upon those who take part In It. When
the victim of it Is already a prisoner,
the officers charged with his restraint
and protection are not only too weak
and few to resist a mob, but are In
most cases in passive and sometimes
In active sympathy with the lynchers.

from the box to the dock, so that con
viction Is practically Impossible. Be
sides that, the sympathy of the com
munity Is with the lynchers, and ihey,
generally speaking, are only the active
voice of the majority, which encour
ages the act and supports the perpetra
tors of It. Nevertheless. In the face of
those opposed conditions. Texas has se
cured thrv conviction, and "more
power to her arm" In like causes for
the future is the encouraging comment
she will hear from all aides.
In a recent strong but harmful book
a distinguished writer has made a plea
of Justification of lynching, whose Pffes
are often reform! to In the South as
palliating the crime. In It Is the story
of an upright man and law-abiding,
who by every means at his command
opposed lynching. He was about to be
married when his fiancee became the
vic.Im of An outrage, which In the
South as elsewhere takes place with un
forgivable crimes. The lover Kd the
lynchers and allowed no man to aid
him In putting the rope around the
guilty negro's neck. Then he boldly
avoed his share In the deed, and an
approving people Indorsed It as a right
eous act. The fault with this story Is
that It begs the whole question by
making It personal to every reader, who
is aked In the directest terms would
you. In that man's place, have done the
same? The answer, having regard to
the qualities of human nature must be
almost invariably yes. But that reply
has no bearing upon the outrage done
to J'jstlco and evad?s the vital Issue
concerned.
The law in the South provides for the
criminal's punishment and for this of
fense has but a single movement, and
It leads to death by execution. The ob
ject of It If guilty, cannot escape, and
it matters nothing to him whether It
be delayed or come promptly. He has
but one life and it atands forfeited. The
lesson of a legal execution must always
be more Impressive and salutary than
the prompt Justice of a mob, and It Is
partly for this reason that lynching Is
a crime. It may have been some satis
faction to the community to allow the
hero of the story to execute with his
own hand an act of vengeance, but the
offense to law was a high price to pay
for the satisfaction.
If the law Is supported by the peo
ple 'its deliberative methods will secure
all the vengeance they can achieve
by the wildest deeds, but if its provi
sions be broken the arm of Justice la
paralyzed in all its functions and a
scoff is made of her. Therefore, Texas,
by these convictions, has done well, and
she baa answered the problem In the
apologue with an emphatic No.
