Bryan says the Republican party
seeks to exalt the-dollar above man
kind Instead of exalting mankind above
the dollar, according to the precept of
Abraham Lincoln. Now waiving the
sacrileg of Mr. Bryan's reference to
Abraham Lincoln as authority to sus
tain the revolutionary doctrines had
vocatv?s, let Mr. Bryan state what he or
his party has done to exalt mankind
above the dollar. True, he and his
party have tried, and are trying now,
to debase the dollar an effort to cor
rupt the currency is one of the pur
poses close to the heart of Bryan, al
though he considered It . good policy
to make no mention of it in his last
speech of acceptanca but how does
that exalt mankind? i Mr. Bryan was
in congress for four years; what meas
ure did ho propose or originate that
tended to exalt mankind? 'He spoke
for free silver, he spoke and voted
for the Wilson bill, but every intelli
gent human creature knows that neith
er of these tended to exalt mankind.
Did the Wilson bill help either labor
or capital?
And what has Mr. Bryan done since
the elope of his congressional career
to exalt mankind? He made a race for
the presidency, and was badly beaten,
especially in the states where he talk
ed most: but what sentiment Jid he
utter that tended to make men happy?
Did he exalt mankind in his papslxv
ate appeals for the West and South
to unite against the East? For labor
to array itself agalnrt capital; for em
ployees to Join hands against their em
clovers. What has he done since or
what Is he doing now to exalt man
kind?
But turning from Bryan to his par
ty, what has Jt done to exalt man
kind? What has that party done and
what is It now doing. In the states
where It has uno.u?stioned power, to
exalt mankind? Is mankind exalted
In North and South Carolina, or In
Mississippi and Louisiana above their
fellows In Pennsylvana, Massachusetts,
Wisconsin, Iowa or Oregon? In a na
tional sense, what has Democracy done
to exalt mankind? Through years of
complaint and a generation of prom
ises, tha people, forgetting the past, at
laAt. turned the country over to De
mocracy In 1893. For the first time In
thirty-three years, the Denucratlc
parry had a chance to do something:
to fulfill Its promise by making men
happy and relieving labor from Its
heavy burdens. Bryan was on hand
to help. What did the Democracy do?
AVha. did Bryan do? Can it be dis
puted that Instead of exalting mankind
and helping to make men happy and
prosperous, there was more debasement
among laborers more loss of capi
tal, more distress among all classes
throughout the country crowded Into
those four years than in all the years
of Republican rule put together, from
Lincoln to McKlnley?
On the other hand what is the record
of the Republican party for the ex
citation of mankind? In the first place,
but without dwelling upon It, the Re
publican party exalted some millions
of slaves Into freedmen. It did this
against the protest, and In spite of the
armed resistance cf Mr. Bryan's party,
("Anc 'right here stands exposed Mr.
Bryan' trickery in the Inapines of his
quotation from the martyred Lincoln
td "he Wstory and former crved of the
party he now repr.wnt and leads.
The words spoken by Mr. Lincoln were
in reproof of the doctrine advocated
at that time by a majority of the
present Bryan crowd that any man,
black or white, should be legradNl to
the level of the dollar by the traffic In
his fl.h as a beast of burden.)
But this was only one of the signal
success achieved by the Republican
party in exalting mankind. The his
tory of the cou.itry for the last forty
year Is the history of the Republican
party. Is there one page In that history
that any patriot would turn back
ward? Is there one pose of that history
that any enlightened Christian In any
land would wish to see eliminated?
Since the Republican party . became
dominant in IStSI the progress of the
pecple In material, mental and mral
development has been the astonishment
of the civilised world. Leaving out
the hiatus from 1S93 to 1S9T the peo-
p'e of this country In the last forty
years have performed more labor In
evety useful field of Industry, made
greater strides In invention, acquired
more wealth and distribute! it more
evenly, besid es advancing higher mor
ally, than did their forefathers In all
the time between the landing on Ply
mouth Rock and up to the beginning of
the civil war.
Mr. Bryan is unfortunate in his
charge against the Republican rarty.
It invites an unhappy comparison.
Whether Mr. Bryan's or the Republican
party has done the more for the exalta
tion of mankind, the record will de
termine. Let the record be examined.
The verdict on that Issue does not rest
In Mr. Bryan's or any other man's
opinion. It Is written on th Indubit
able pages of the country's, last forty
years' history.
