The fact Is that the contractor who
put In the flooring either did the work
under the Instructions of an Idiot who
chanced to be In authority at the time
the contract waa let or he swindled
the county most shamefully., The
floor of the Jail Is a mere shell. In
stead of being composed of the best
duality of emient it Is but a layer of
Vock and adobe covered with a layer
of the cheapest grade of cement. Any
prisoner, posccd of a Jack-knife
could earflly gain his freedom within a
few , hours without dlttlrulty. Wylle
and Newman accomplished their work
with an ordinary wrought iron nail
driven through u block of wood, an In
strument which would scarcely have
penetrated an ordinary school slate
without great force being employed.
The hole cut through the floor by the
prisoners was repaired yesterday af
ternoon with cement and suel" rock,
and It Is certain that the next batch
of prisoners who attempt to escape will
choose another spot In the floor through
which to gain an exit. Wylle and
Newman are still confined In dark cells
and tfherlff Llnvllle will keep them
there for several days longer aa a
penalty for their attempts to break

slung -shot clearly Indicated that the
prisoners were determined upon desper

sary to employ them to carry out their
