HAWAILKN FRUITS.
The Honolulu Republican of June 29
contains an Interview with a promi
nent fruit shipper regarding the possi
bilities and advantages of , extensive
fruit-raising there and the exportation
of tropical and semi-tropical varieties
to the States.
It is remarkable that our enterpris
ing shippers and Importers here have
paid so little attention to Importations
of thit, kind, and now that a new line
from Portland to Manila la being
talked of, the Immense possibilities of
his trade should be considered.
Instead of the one poor Quality of
banana now found In the Oregon mar
ket, and for which the consumer has
to pay from twenty-five to forty
cents per dozen, many greatly supe
rior varieties could be procured from
the Hawaiian territory and elsewhere
at a cost of from five to fifteen cents
per doren to the importer. Choice
bunches for shipping sell at Honolulu
fcr one dollar each, and can be pro
cured at Panama and tn some of the
islands of the Philippine archipelago
as low as twenty-five cents each. The
common grade sold here costs much
lew.
The same Is true of the pineapple,
which can be bought in the East Indies
in unlimited quantities for three cents
each, and landed In Portland Inside of
four weeks' time. The price In the Ha
waiian Islands is considerably higher
because cf greater nearness to our
market, but there Is no reason why we
should pay twenty-five cents for an
inferior fruit and find them hard to
get at that price. Fresh limes, figs,
grapes and mangoes could also be pro
cured, and would meet a ready sale In
our markets.
The possibilities of our new terri
tory as a great supply station of the
choicest tropical fruits are stupendous
and mean fortunes to the producers
there, as well as to the enterprising
shippers who will undertake importa
tions to this coast on a large scale.

general Information suited to Japanese

affair. :
There Is a charm about the style of
Japanese writers who have a fair
knowledge of English, though their
florid language Pt often as amusing to
American readers as It Is far-fetched.
The following quotation from the ed
itor's salutctory Is a ca.e In point:
" Our editorial department shall contain
brlc a brae which will radiate tld bits
of the eerebral spice and pyrotechnics
peculiar to our Individuality."
The Tribune Is well printed on
heavy paper and well edited, but more
care In proof reading would Improve
Its appearance.
The publishers propose to extend Its
circulation throiiKh.iut the English
sp?aklng Japanese cettlements of th
world, and as a means of Increasing
the now-exlstirg familiarity and good
feeling between Japan and America it
will doubtless play an Important part.
Nebraska hogs sold In Omaha, May
31, at it 50 per head more than on the
same date four years ago. yet the
World-Herald, Mr. Bryan's personal
organ, which Is published In Omaha.aa
strted very vigorously during the 1S94
campaign that the prices of no farm
products could advance without the
free and unlimited coinage of silver.
Two billions two hundred millions of
dollars was the value of our foreign
commerce during the fiscal year Just
ended, of which American vessels car
ried 7 per cent foreign ships carrying
93 per cent and earning $200,000,000 at
the expense of the American people.
The sentiment in favor of the pass
age of the ship subsidy bill grows
stronger and stionger all ov,?r the coun
try as the statistics of our foreign trade
for the fiscal year Just ended are stud
led. Under this administration, our farm
ers, merchants and manufacturers have
been assured that the markets of
China would always be open to them
in equal competition with other nations.
Every corn-fed steer In Nebraska is
now worth til to 116 more than In 1S96.
Farmers In that state will baldly vote
for democratic times again.
The total gross earnings of railroads
were 1238.000,000 larger last year than
In 1S93.
A CHRISTIAN HERO.
Taco'ma Ledger.
S.j many events of world-wide inter
est have been taking place that the
death of a hero, who, like Bayard and
Sidney, was above fear and reproach,
has attracted but little attention. Such
a man was Admiral John W. Philip,
who died a few days ago of heart dis
ease. He Is the second eminent com
mander of the Spanish-American War
to pass over to the great majority.
Admiral Philip had a long and honora
ble career as an officer of the American
navy, seeing active service in two wars.
Admiral Philip will be best remem
bered as the victorious commanler of
the formerly hoodooed Texas, who said
to his men at Santiago: "Don't cheer,
boys, the poor devils are dying," and
who after the battle bared his head
and said to his ship's company: "I
want to make public acknowledgement
here that 1 believe in God the Father
Almighty. I want all you officers and
men to lift your hats and from your
h-arta offer thanks to the Almighty."
Captain Philip's words will be re
membered with those of Philip Sidney
and cf the galUnt Craven, who In the
sinking monitor Tecumseh at Mobile
aald: "After you, pilot," and stepped
back to deah to allow his comrade to
escape.
