OUR INTERESTS AT STAKE IN
CHINA.
The critical condition of affairs in Chi
na which has necessitated the joint
intervention of the powers will natur
ally attract the attention of Americans
to the value and extent of the com
mercial Interests we have at stake In
that empire. It is generally known
that within the last decade our trade
with China has Increased to such an
extent that the United States neces
sarily becomes a factor, along with
Russia. Great Britain and Germany,
that must be respected In any future
changes or complications involving the
integrity of the kingdom.
That our interests are much great
er than Is popularly supposed Is evi
dent from the report of China's Im
port and export trade for 1S99. recent
ly forwarded to the state department
by Consul-General Goodnow from
Shanghai. Notwithstanding the fact
that we claim no particular "sphere"
of influence, as do Great Britain. Rus
sia. Germany and France, the United
States leads all other nations In the
sale of cotton goods and kerosene In
China. In 1899 the imports of cotton
drills from America were 1.607,710
pieces; from England, U3.S27 pieces;
from Holland. 29.490 pieces. During
the year the imports of sheetings from
America amounted to J.960,197 pieces;
from England, 856,336 pieces; from In
dia, 41.192 pieces.
While American kerosene still leads
in China, our oil is being steadily
crowded out by the Russian product.
The condition of our kerene trade
In China Is most graphically shown
by the following table of imports for
'1898 and 1899:
Gallons.
1898. 1899.
American kerosene ..43.335.9J0 27,628.418
Russian kerosene ...13.497,620 19,776.760
Dutch kerosene 13.223,075 3.861,898
The net value of the import trade
for the year is estimated at 204,748,454
halkwan taels (J13S.103.778), beli.gan ad
vance of 55,169,122 halkwan taels over
the previous year and double the fig
ures for 1890. The trade In cotton
goods, which had remained practically
stationary for three years, also made
a great Jump, the value having risen
from 77,618,824 halkwan taels ($54,255.
557) to 103,456,048 halkwan taels (173,
571.917). Nearly every article mentioned
in the table of Imports, with the excep
tion of English and Dutch Jeans and
English yarn, waa imported in much
larger quantities than In 1898. The
import of flour U6ed In the making
of fancy cakes rose from 1.774,712 halk
wan taels to 3,189,497 haikwan taels,
or J2.266.138.
The most significant figures of all,
however, are those which tell of the
marvelous progress of railway build
ing In the Mongolian Kingdom, the
greater portion of the material for
which came from the United States.
It Is also Interesting to note the mark
ed increase in the imports of those
articles which denote a desire for com
fort and luxury, such as cigars, clocks,
watches, window glass, lamps, matches,
needles, perfumery, soap, sugar and
umbrellas, the bulk of which were sup
plied by England and the United States.
In answer to several anxious Inquir
ers we would say that the usual wars
and rebellions are still going on tn
Central and South America, Owing,
however, to disturbances elsewhere
they are not considered worthy of
present attention.
One of the sons of Jay Gould Is go
ing to marry a titled English woman.
Owing to the fact that the title will not
do him any good we do not know what
argument she had to use in making
arrangements to share his wad.
A Concord, N. H., Judge has rendered
a decision In which he says soda water
Is one of the necessities of life. He
will now have only himself to blame If
the girls refer to him as "a ewtet

Two or three headline writers have
failed thus far to say: "The clans are
gathered In Philadelphia." but they
will hardly overlook the opportunity.
In addition to having an open door
in China the powers may find It nec
essary to knock down the wall and
smash the masonry.
In one respect war Is a good deal
like a baseball game. It Is never over

The Ohio democrats evidently thought
Fryan Is In favor of silver for political
purpose only.
Gt'LD DEMOCRATS STILL FOR
GOLD.
New York Tribune.
Some cf the gold democrats of the
East may. b so tired of their princi
ples that they are ready to embrace
Bryanlsm, but they get no comfort from
men like General Buckner, their candi
date for vice-president four ytars ago.
He declares that through the country
at large the gold democrats are strong
er now than they were then, and that
the cause of sound money has m.idi
many converts from among those who
voted for free silver In 1S96. At the
same time he does not expect that the
sound money democrats will hold any
convention or nominate any ticket. The
clear inference is that if the Kansas
City conveniion persists In reaffirming
the monetary doctrines of the Chicago
platform the bulk of this vote will go
to McKinley.
It Is doubtless true that other Issues
will affect popular Judgment all over
the country, and gold democrats here
who are anxious for any excuse to op
pose the republicans, and others whose
vision is blinded to everything but ex
pansion, may be drawn over to Bryan,
but in the Middle and Far West it Is
doubtful If there is any such tendency
among gold democrats, and It Is there
that the gold democrats have gained
their principal accessions. Those whose
conviction of the errors of Bryanlsm
U recent are less likely to take a luke
warm interest in sound money than
those who once fought that battle.
The Western farmers who voted for
Bryan and free silver and have since
learned from practical experience the
value to them of the gold standard
are not to be lightly led to vote for the
man who before deluded thern. They
have too recently escaped from his
clutches. It would take a stronger
feeling against expansion than is yet
anywhere manifested in the West to
take back to Bryan old supporters
who, while McKlnley waa In the White
House developing the policies now be
fore the people, were well enough sat
isfied with those policies In the making
to turn from Bryan on the silver ques
tion after It had been settled as much
as it is now and while Bryan stood in
antagonism to the administration on
the new issues. There would be no
logic in such abandonment of what
these voters themselves under practi
cally existing conditions have adopted
as their controlling political principle.
No man who became a gold democrat
since 1896 can well support Bryan. On
ly he who took that stand under other
conditions, before the questions growing
out of the war came up. can find a
good excuse for urging new and para
mount Issues as a reason for change.
General Buckner is probably right In
looking for no gold democratic nomi
nations. Indeed, it is difficult to see
how there could be any. Antl-expan-slonlsts
might take the name of the
organization which ran Palmer and
Buckner. Devitees of any other ldfra
might do the same. But the move
ment would not be a sound money
movement any more. The prefervation
of financial stability depends on the
republican party, and there is no help
ful halfway movement possible. Though
Mr. Eryan might be hampered by ex
isting laws made to protect the gold
standard, yet In the presidency he
could doubtless tamper with the
finances by mere executive acts with
as disastrous results an did Andrew
Jackson In spite of all congress could
do. Unless he could In a measure car
ry out his policy his whole present
platform of continued appeal to silver
men Is a fraud.
