same fuel and power as that produced

a sirgle power station In Lincoln Park
during the Chicago exposition, and
this station was required to generate
11.006 horse power, on the Champs
de Mars this year, from the several sta
tions established, only 15,000 horse
power is required In the aggregate to
do all the electric lighting of the Paris
exposition and drive every piece of ma
chinery. Scarcely a week passes with
out an announcement in the. trade
journals that some new invention is
about to be placed In this or that man-
ufacturing establishment which will
double the electrical power used with
out increasing the slie of the engine
or the amount of fuel consumed.
The London Financial Times says
the Question whether merchandise
shall or shall not be sent abroad from
the United States Is determined to
quite a considerable extend by the price
asked for sending it abroad, and when
this is exceptionally high It must In
many cases trench so far upon possi
ble profits as to make such shipments
unattractive. By having this barrier
raised around our frontier our trade
must suffer to some extent, and the
advocates of bounties to American
hipping have not been slow to make
as much as they possibly can out of
the situation. Senator Frye, in a re
port which he has made on the ship
ubsidy bill, also states that the pres
ent condition of affairs Indicates the
mprudence of being dependent upon
England for transportation facilities,
since when England becomes Involved
In a foreign war America suffers I
through lack of Its accustomed trans
port facilities for trade. Obviously
the broader and more general the own
ership of merchant tonnage becomes
the better it will be for all commercial
nations (apart from English shipown
era), sincre they will have, so to speak,
two more strings to their low.

compared with April, 1899, it Is quite
apparent that the record of the year,
which ends less than 60 days hence,
will exceed that of any earlier year in
our history.
