A pamphlet, edited by W. T. Stead,
entitled "War Against War," has been
revived at the Astorian office, mailed
from London. As may be expected,
from the name of Us editor, it is a pro
tost against the war In South Africa
but such a protest! Instead of a fair
and dignified discussion of the his
tory leading up to the South African
st rug sit', with an argument in favor of
the Justice or merits of the Boer side.
It is stuffed with the most shocking
statements reflecting upon the valor
and humanity of the men and officers
who are giving up their lives for their
country Mr. Stead's country whether
right or wrong on the banks of the
Tugela and Modder rivers. It is al
most Incredible that the government of
England would admit to the malls for
circulation among English people and
those of foreign countries, possible
enemies, such a mass of Intemperate
and palpably untruthful stuff, calcu
lated to misrepresent hT motives and
belittle the services of her soldiers on
th battle iields of a distant country.
It Is certainly carrying the theory of
individual liberty and freedom of opin
ion entirely too far when a man iike
this Stead is left unrestrained In his
efforts to Inflame public passion at
home and abroad against his country
"TrV emergencies like that now confront
ing England. I'nder like circumstances
in some sections of America he would,
and rightly, too, be strung up to the
nearest lamp-post on sight by an in
dignant populace.

hear much of the Irish vote and the

the Scotch vote, the English vote or I

all Americans as much as possible)
does not vote en masse. The Irish

ple is to use the American power for
th purpose of satisfying a race hatred
in harassing a friendly people. All
Irishmen and Germans are not of the
material to be massed at the polls In
support of a green ticket or one col- j

only vote that can claim a patriotic I

becomes a citizen he throws off his
lesiance to the emperor. When an
ishman becomes a citizen he throws
off his allegiance to the queen and to
Ireland, too. and to all other foreign
entanglements. The quicker we dis
courage class legislation and class rec
ognition, the better. George Washing
ton, the defender of the foregoing sen
timents, was f.n-t of all an American,
although his blood was English.
Those who are watching the course
of events in South Africa without prej
udice for the Boer or British are wait
ing with much Interfst the report
which may be now so n expected of the
reli-f of JIafeking. There are few-
finer passages in the story of the war
than that abut Colonel i;aden-Pow-ell's
defense of that place for months
against an overwhelming force. He
had at the outset only about six hun
dred men, and at present cannot sure
ly have as many as five hundred ef
fectives. Yet he has hld at bay an
army of from two thousand to six
thousand Boers, commanded by one of
the foremost Boer generals. Baden
Pote!ls undoubted military skill has
been rivalled only by his Imperturbabil
ity. When summoned to surrender In
order to avert bloodshed, he merely
asked when the bloodshed was to be
gin. When again summoned to sur
render In order to put a stop to the
destruction of life and property, he re
plied that when he felt any need of
relief from such destruction he would
let the Boers know. And when he
found the Boers spreading exaggerated
tal-rs about the -.MJuntry for political
effect, he responded with a proclama
tion which for sheer "tall talk" and
''bluffing' beats all previous records.
Beyond doubt, his cheery disposition,
his unfailing fund of humor and ir-
repre.Mible optimism has gone far in

hold their ground against awful odds.
It is a remarkable fact, too little com
mented on, that the Boers have not
yet succeeded in reducing one single
British garrison of the several secure
ly locked within their lines since the
war began. If Buller has been unable
to nlake headway against the Inac
cessible entrenchments among the
rocky hills surrounding Ladysmith, he
has at least shown the courage to try
to do so on at least two If not three
occasions. But the Boers have not on
ly failed to capture the starved and
enervated British garrisons they have
had so long imprisoned; they have not
even attempted, with all their over
whelming force, to do so. When we
talk of British "reverses" it is only
fair to remember that perhaps the
only reason why there are no Boer re
verses to record is because the Boers

have afforded no opportunities to the
