ISN'T THIS STEALING?
It illw.iy Age.
A peculiar result of the ao-cnllod enr
"famine" which mean almply that
the volume of freight to 1h hnndlixl
has Increased far more rapidly than
the numlier of cars neoessary to handle
It, nnd conveys no giiRffi-atlon of blight
ed fields and starving farmers, but the
contrary-has come to light In two or
three Instance. In the rase of one
road, for which 1.10 cars weiv ordered
for delivery In June, notification f
their shipment n-achexl the olllclals In
August. The cars, however, did not
arrive, and up to the present time It I?
said that only 25 of them have biv-n
received. Occasionally one Is seen on a
foreign road heavily haded ami billed
to some distant point. Another road
linn similarly expected a shipment of
1.000 cars In sundry Inmatlmenm. The
most satisfactory Information obtain
able ns yet has been to the effect that
they were In service upon some of the
numerous lines between the point of
manufacture and that of Intended use.
The road Is anxiously awaiting Its
equipment nnd the builders their pay.
In the face of thee wholesale conver

A POEM ON MANKIND.
Like what la man, but like a sprouting

That grow and ripens but to cast Its
seed
Among the thistles and the tares of life
And then to ae It strangled In th

Or like the clouds that wander with the

And pass unnoticed from a life of eas.?T

alas!
To starve or strangle In the tangled

These are thoughts that are apt to
come to many people at tlmea. espe

ray hlg prices for medicine. But there
Is one drug store in Or-gon where you
can anve from 10 to 15 per cent on
everythliig you buy, and that la J. A.
Oletiienson's Drug Store, at 227 Yam

you can get Hood' Siirsaparilla at 70c;

IMPROVED TOURIST SLEEPERS.
Railroad Are Acceding to Demands of
Middle Classes Who Want Better
Slevplng-Car Service.
A TATAL OPPORTUNITY.
From The Chicago Recwd.
"Did that bottle of medicine do your
ftnut any good?"
,rNo; a oon aa she read the wrapper
she got three new disease."
In response to the demands of the
tidies the O. R. & N. and Its connec
tions are placing In operation a much
better grade of tourist sleepers for Vi
rni2 cmst service than At any prevlo
time. The largely Increased traffic to
tnis section of the country has demand
ed all the Improvement of latter-day
transportation, and In consideration of
una tne railroads are establishing a
service which Is excellent tn every nar-
tlcular. Not only are the wlshen of
first-class passengers served, but those
who nre traveling to and from Uie East
on second-dnsa tickets are splendidly
cared for. There was a time when a
tourist sleeper appealed to a limited
number of people who were traveling
on the "cheap" order. In every meaning
of the term. Now, however, there has
been a radical change. With the bet
ter tourist sleepers In operation th
class of passenger has been Improved,
and one may now travel upon them
and enloy all the privileges of a flrst
clnss sleeper at a greately reduced rate.
Dally, on the O. R. A N. east-bound
fast mall, Is attached one of these lat
est Improved tourist sleepers, a model
of beauty and handsome appolntmentA
The new cars are almcst an exact
counterpart of the first-class sleepers.
One noticeable feature of the new
tourist cars Is th absence of A smoking
apartment. The new cars being bull:
by the Pullman Company or not pro
vided with smoking apartments. This
new departure has been taken because
of the fact that mist through trains
are provided with oomDomt par, whloh
f provide a smoker for the f leeptng-car
passenger
