In Canada, where the leader of the opposition lias given the public assur ance that a proposal on the part of the government to equip and dispatch a corps of 1C50 men for service in South Africa will meet with unqualified sup port, the local forces consist of a body known an the Canadian militia. This body, of which the constitution Ih gov erned by the Canadian militia act of 1S86, under the immediate command of a mafor general of the British army country, was 2.448 men, 181 officers and' , 685 horses of the defense force, lnclud l Ing volunteers, with an additional 1.794 men of the rifle clubs and police force, vh ar liable to be called out for i n.ill'ary service. The (Queensland forc j es, exclusive of the rifle clubs and the i poHc: force are ilvided, like the Can ' a.llan, into three sections. There h 1 first the permanent artillery secondly the militia and thirldy the volunteers. I The contribution which Queensland, ' acting alone, proposed to make to the imperial forces for South Africa would have consisted of 20 mounted Infantry, fully eouipped. including horses. The splendid quality of these troops Stag ful'y recognized on the occasion of their visit to England for the Diamond Jub ilee of 137. I The New South Wales forces, like , those of Queensland, are divided Into permanent forces fully paid, militia partly r-ald, and volunteers. Th- per manent forces include the headquarters ."taff. ordance .-naff, permanent staff, and Ixodes these, a nucleus of artillery engineers, medical staff corps and army service corps. The total number, In cluding officers and men, is 591. The partially paid forces Include lancers, mount"d rifles. 1eld and garrison, ar tillery, infantry, engineers, submarine miners, army service corps and medical In Tasmania there are fixed defenses and a volunteer force. The total strength of the volunteer corps Is 1.779 officers and men.
