New York has lost 1U hold on the
tea Importing trade of the country.
The new crop of the present and fu
ture will go east over the transconti
nental roads after being brought across
the Pacific In the regular liners. This,
Tea Inspector Chapin says. Is practical
ly true now, but It will be more mark
ed In the future.
Not only is better time made by
shipments across the continent than
by way of the Suez canal, but a sav
ing in freights results and the tea Is
of a better quality. By way of the
Sues canal Into New York it takes
of SO days to receive a consignment of
tea even from Amoy, the most fav
orable point In China. Three or four
weeks' time would ship tea from China
to New York by way of a trans-Paclfle
liner and the transcontinental railroads.
Tea Inspector Chapln Is an authority
on teas. Not only does he thoroughly
understand the quality of teas, but he
waa for a long time engaged in the,
tea trade and understands the condi
tions of the trade In different parts of
the country.
"The tea trade Is being more and
more localized," said the ta Inspector
yesterday. "Inntea1 of supplying the
markets from Near York as heretofore,
the importations are IHng shipped
frm the Pacific cjast direct to Jobbers
in St. Paul. Chicago, St. Tvuls and
other points. The Northwest !s sup
plied from the coast.
"New Y'rk has lost trade It can
rever regain and a peculiar part of it
Is that New York merchants are Just
awakening to the fact that the trade
Is slipping away. It now conts about
70 cents a hundred to hln tea from Chi
na to New York by way of the coast

car al traffic. The heavy freight
charges of '.he long Journey and the
tolls exacted from passing through the
canal are more than the traffic will
bear.

of tho county cleric of Clatsop county,
Oregon, Septombcr 25th, and dally
thcrenftor until and Including Septem
ber 30th, to publicly examine the as
sessment roll for the year 1899, and
correct all error In valuation, descrip
tion or qualities of land, Iota or other
proporty, and It shall be the duty of all
parties Interested to appear at that
