6 TUK MORNING ASK)RlA Tlll'RSDA MOllNlflG, NElTKMltKK !, 8W. HIGH CHARTERS WILL PREVAIL Scarcity of Grain Ships at San Francisco Due to War Transports. PUGET SOUND SHORT ALSO Portland's Small Craft Prices Must Soon Go Over the Forty Five Shilling Mirk. The scarcity of grain ships Is becom- ing a serious matter to shippers hav- lng large quantles of cereals ready to load for the Uniud Kingdom. Onlyt ten grain-laden vessels have cleared i , from San Francihco this month, ac- cording to the Call, and ihere are but' three unchartered vessels suitable to the Kiain trade In tha.1 port. In former years If the grain fleet of sailing ves sels proved inadequate to handle the wheat yield, tramp steamt ri were char tered and the wheat was sent to Its destination at an Increased expense. This year the government has charter ed all the available steamers for Its transport service, and grain dealer have been compelled to depend on the sailing fleet, which is unable to handle the grain. The ship British Isles, the ship Cam brlan Hills and the bark Ivanhoe are the only unchartered vessels In Ban Francisco available for the grain trade, and there Is no doubt that thce will be under a charter within a few days. The Aristomene, Inveramsay and Earl of Dunmore are lying In the stream, loaded with grain, unable to get away because of the scarcity of sailors. September Is usually the ban ner month of tho year for grain ship ments. An a rule from thirty to forty grain laden vessels clear for Europe during that month. If all the grain vessels in port get away this month, the total numbr will be only sixteen. Eppinger & Co. are chartering vessels at I'ugt t sound and other coat ports and sending them to this city In bal last to load grain. Of course, charter prices are rising rapidly under the; circumstances, and charterers are of fering SCs. and 37s., while In the early part of the season 25s. or 30s. waa en average price. Grain merchants are making strenu ous efforts to charter vesels and all IhliN. iniyysN. i iyyyrv ! tyyyyyifNs. i J 'y ' VV ' JIttcndcn, Business The Astorian has tiMed a number of the latest faces of type to its job printing de partment, an J it prepared to turn out a quality of . . . The British ship Leyland Brothers has recently been chartered at San Diego and Is on her way north to load grain. Ships which come to San Francisco taking chance of get ting a cargo will make an extremely profitable season, and If prices rise In the European markets before the wheat arrives, the grain dealers will not lose. DC! WITH A PENSION. Couchee, a bull terrier, went through the Santiago campaign, braved the nor rors of Montauk Plont and now ha a pension, says the Boston Post. Couche. besides being a veteran of the Spanish war, has enjoyed, seven state encampments. This dog Is the property of Sergeant M. J. Hnran, Company O, Ninth regiment, whose home is In Worcester. When the Maine went to he bottom of Havana harbor In February, 1898, Sergeant Horan made up his mind that there was going to be a war, and having long been a member of the Ninth he felt sure that be would see ome royal service with that regl ment. So he took his faithful Couchee with him. The first time Couchee ap pared In camp he wore a little blanket 0n which was Inscribed, ' I am going1 Cuba. Are yon with us?"
