This, the specialists belljeve, Is the
best way to Increase the Nation's
supply of honey,
In New York State there were 12
county beekeepers' associations, and
thru the efforts of th extension spe
cialists 15 more were organized. Tho
school brought many of the members
of thjeee new associations together.
At one session of tlve school those
pireeent were asked to give the num
ber of colonies each owned, and the
number of pounds of honey produc
ed. Ninety-two reports showed an
average of 111 colonies for each per
son, with a total of 672,542 pounds,
an average of 6,058 pounds for each
colony. The New York State De
partment of Agriculture cooperated
with ihfi Federal beemen, and they
were so pleased with thte success of
the school that they guaranteed an
attendance of sevoral hundred peo
ple it a similar school should be
held njext year.

Demand for flab Canned Product,
Some of the canning club girls
organized by the home demonstra
tion agents of the United States De
partment of Agriculture and the
State agricultural colleges utilize
their canning knowledge only to pro
vide the family table with plenty of
fruit and vegetables. The larger
numler, however, not only practice
what they have learned for the bene
fit of their families, but Increase
their Income by marketing the sur
plus. Tbje agents who have helped
during the canning later assist in
the marketing of the products. The
uniform excellence of the 4-H brand
makes it a comparatively easy task
to keep a customer once he has used
the product. The agent In Jasper
county, Mias., has found a ready sale
with a lumber company for the can
ned fruits and vegetable her girls
wish to sellt. Onfe day la March
$175 worth were weighed, sold and
shipped to this company. The de
mand la constant, because the buyer
reports that the club girls' canned
goods are the best he has found on
the market.

Lower Rate on Road
Material is Sought
Salem, Ore., April 22. Recent
action of th'e federal railroad admin
istration In reducing freight rates on
road-buildlng materials by 10 cents
a ton will not hare the effect of
causing the Oregon publlo servico
commission to abandon Its efforts to
oprcure what It holds to be adequate
reductions.
When the war Increases In freight
rates wwje made the rate oni road
bulldlng materials was increased 20
cents a ton. The reduction recently
ordered Is 10 cents under the war
Increase or the present commercial
rote. This lacks a great deal of be
ing as low as recommended by the
Oregon district freight traffic com
mittees and the recommendation of
the service commission was 10 cents
under that of the freight traffic com
mittee. Under the railroad admin
istration's order the minimum Is
placad at 40 cents per net ton ex
cept wHen the commercial rate Is
less than 40 cents, In which event
the present rate appltea, A tele
gram received by the Oregon com
mission from Max Th'elen, one of the
directors of the railroad administra
tion office, says the scale proposed
by the district' freight trafflo com
mittee was not actjed upon by rall
