About one hundred members of the California Coast Artillery passed through this city Tuesday morning en route to Fort Worden, Wash., from Fort McDowell, Angela, Cal., where they have been stationed for some - time. They were of the 3rd and 17th . ompanles. They were a happy bunch and wero delighted at being able to make the trip through Ore gon. The county court has put a force . of twelve or fifteen men and teams to work building a new road from Butte Falls to the bridge across Big Butte, a distance of seven miles. This will eliminate the Ginger creek hill, with a 15 per cent grade, and replaces it with a 4'4 per cent grade. The new road will be a great convenience and gives a beautiful view of the Butte creek gorge, lumber mill, fish hatchery and the timbered hills and Mt. McLoughlln. Fred Strip, the new superintendent of the Metropolitan Insurance com pany In this district was a visitor in the city Monday, conferring with Wil fred Carr and Kenneth McWIlllifms, local representatives of the Metropoli tan. Mr. Strip was formerly assist ant to the superintendent of agencies at San Francisco and comes here fro.n Tancouver, B. C, where he establish ed a fine record. He succeeat, J. E. Treverrow, who has 6Cn promoted and left Saturday to take the superln tendency of the Salem district. Last Thursday Dr. D. M. Brower of Ashland received a telegram an flouncing the death of his brother, Jacob, in "Chicago. He was 65 years old and was known here 20 years ago when his father lived at Talent. De ceased was deaf and dumb and for ' years was Industrial instructor in the Oregon Deaf Mute Institution at Sa lem. He also worked as a printer on the Salem Statesman and the Albany Democrat. In recent years he has been engaged in boat making atKen- sko, Wis. Homer C, Myers of Seattle, his father and mother and wife, stopped In Ashland Tuesday on hearing of conditions on the Siskiyou Hlghwav, which was made Impassable by the rain of Monday night, which was turned to a foot of slushy snow on the summit.
