The Civic Improvement Club will
meet tomorrow afternoon, and every
woman in Ashland is invited to at
tend. A number of pertinent matters
will receive discussion and lessons in
basketry will follow the meeting.
Presbyterian Missionary Meeting.
Presbyterian missionary meeting
was held at Mrs. Shlnn's home Friday
afternoon. The devotional part of the
meeting was conducted by Mrs. Mc
Coy. Mrs. Nims conducted the pro
gram, assisted by Mesdames Lamkln,
Garrett, Shlnn and Mathes. Fifteen
ladies were present and the meeting
was a very Interesting one.
Plan Hull).
A committee of young people met
at the Presbyterian manse recently to
make plans for the Christian Endeav
or rally February 28. Paul Rrown
and C. E. Hamilton will be the chief
speakers on that occasion. Those
present at the committee meeting
wore Misses Ruth (tannin, Plna Rene
diet, Cornelia Larson. Gladys Carna
lian and Mr. Win Hayes.
Wednesday Club.
The Wednesday Afternoon Club
will meet February 14 with Mrs. F.
G. Swedenbnrg at her residence at
the corner of Iowa and Union streets,
Mrs. Turner, Mrs. L. S. llrown, Mrs.
Js'ewiand, Mrs. Elsie Churchman and
Mrs.. Camps will assist In entertain

City Union to Fleet.
i The City Union, consisting of the
young folks' societies of all the
churches, expects soon to elect. of
ficers for the ensuing year. Those
appointed on the nominating commit
tee are as follows: Presbyterian
church, Miss Ruth Osmun; Baptist
church, O. H. Buttorfield; Christian
church, Oscar Cooper; Congregational
church, Mary Spencer; M. E. church,
John RIgg. This committee met at
the M. E. church Sunday afternoon,
February 11.
Honor Pastor's Wife.
A number of the Nazarene ladies
met at the home of Mrs. Slingerland
on .North Main street last Tuesday
and spent a pleasant hour together
in a social way in honor of their pas
tor's wlfo, Mrs. Dorman D. Edwards.
Nice refreshments were served and a
general good time enjoyed by all.
Those present wore Mesdames Fraley,
Stoner, Snyder, Will Ashcraft, Rur
nette, Peffloy, Spcnce, Cullen, Cul
berson, Morthland, Wiley, Slingerland
and Rev and Mrs. Edwards.
Thilatbea.
The Thllathea mission met at the
home of Miss Mae Hatfield on the
afternoon of February 10. After a
short business session a social time
followed, which Included valentine
games of various kinds, intermingled
with fancy work and gay chatter.
After an unusually merry time, most
delicious and substantial refresh
ments were served, consisting of
baked corn and chicken tamales
wero served with catsup and salted
wafers, chocolate eclairs, fig wafers,
fruit cake and fruit punch.
Surprise.
Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Rush were glad
ly surprised last Friday evening by
a few of their neighbors coming in to
spend the evening, bringing refresh
ments' and a pleasant smile along
with them. The occasion was Mr.
M. K. Missionary Meeting:
The Methodist ladies held their
missionary meeting Friday afternoon
at the M. E. church. A largo attend
ance of women was present and a
splendid program rendered. Mrs. O.
.1. Rathbun led the meeting, the sub
ject being "Introduction of Missions
Into Mexico." There was a round
table discussion, each lady represent
ing an emigrant and presenting the
subject from their several stand
points. Papers read: "The Bible in
Latin Land," Mrs. Billings; "In Land
of 'Dohes and Sunshine," Mrs. Her
bert; "Spain in America," Mrs. Hatch.
Mexican Dinner.
The Mexican dinner at G. A. R. hall
Thursday was a decided success.
Everything w'ent off nicely and the
Ashland folks seemed to enjoy the
peculiar viands that are such a de
light to the Mexican palate. Mrs. O.
W. Long, the Dorcas Society presi
dent, deserves much credit for the
harmonious teamwork among her
lady helpers in both dining room and
kitchen. Those boys that washed the
dlBhes, too, weren't slow. And "last
but not least." the chief cook, Mrs
W. L. Melllnger, deserved a bouquet
(and 'tis said she got It) for shoul
dering the responsibility of preparing
all of those wonderful dishes that
were more palatable than pronounce'

little Gall Lynch was much enjoyed,
as was also a comic reading by Mrs.

Mr. and Mrs. Carl Loveland will
hold another dancing class Thursday
evening of this week after the first
show at the VIning, and will teach
some more of the Two-Two and Lon
don Taps.
Luncheon,
Mrs. W. E. Blake entertained Sat
urday afternoon at a dainty little
luncheon for nine of her friends.
Decorations and the luncheon carried
out the valentine idea and the table
was particularly attractive with its
shaded candles and dainty arrange
ment. A two-courso luncheon was
served. Those present were: Mes
dames Clark Bush, Louis Dodge, F.
H. Johnson, J. H. McGeo, Will Mitch
ell, W. E. Newcombe, Chester Steven
son, W. H. Yco and Roy Walker.

Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Eastman en
tertained Friday evening in honor
of Mr. Charles Hosmer of Salt Lake
city, who is visiting them for a few
days. Cards and dancing passed a
jolly evening and refreshments of a
dainty nature were served. Those
present were: Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Robertson, Misses Lydla McCall, Ger
trude Biede, Georgia Coffee, Bernita
Mix and Holeno Casey, Messrs.
Charles Hosmer, Wlllard Veght,

Card Party.
The Auxiliary card party at Aux
iliary hall Friday evening was one
of the largest and most successful
social affairs of recent months in
Ashland. Twenty-one tables were
filled for 500, at which Mrs. C. W.
Banta and Mr. Andrew McGee car
ried off first prizes of a beautiful
bouquet of carnations and a deck of
cards in a leather case. Mr. Sam
McN'alr and Miss Hortense Winter
were consoled with prizes for their
poor luck. Refreshments of a more
than "dainty" nature were served
The hall was artistically decorated
with hearts and cuplds, and In every
detail the affair reflected great
credit upon the ladles of the various
committee In charge. During the
course of the evening Mrs. Perry
Ashcraft, Mrs. D. I. Norrls and Mrs,
Henry Provost rendered vocal solos,
which were appreciated by hearty en
cores.
Five Fined By
Summary Court
Members of the local first com
pany, Oregon Coast Artillory, who
have had unexcused absences from
drills chalked up against their names
were hauled up before a summary
court at tho armory recently, presid
ed over by Lieutenant Foss of tho
Medford company. Twelve members
were put through a cross-examina
tion and finca assessed against five.
Interest in tho company's work and
attendance at drills Rave taken a
great Impetus following upon the de
velopments of the diplomatic situa
tion, and the local company is in
fine shape to respond to a call. j
Sudden Death of
Young Man Shocks

"Rllly" Mitchell, seventcen-year-:
old son of Mr. and Mrs. Horace
Mitchell, died at a local hospital Sun
day noon following upon an opera- i
tlon for appendicitis. The young
man was a student in his second year
at Ashland high school and known
throughout the city. His death comes
as a sudden shock to the entire com-,
munity. The attack of Illness was
very sudden, developing two days be
fore his death, 't was found that
the disease had progressed boyond a
stage where It was possible to save
him. The funeral will be held Tues
day at 2 o'clock from the Murphy 1
residence on the Boulevard.

Passes Senate
The 'bill to prohibit fishing with
seines and set nets In the Rogue riv
er passed tho senate at Salem Satur
day by a vote of 24 to 5, and the
Ashland men who have been working
for the passage of the bill and, In
fact, the entire community is rejoic
ing over the success. The bill now
needs only tho signature of Governor
Withy com be to become a law. and
his veto is, not thought likely.

Revival Meetings.
The Nazarent church began a series
of evangelistic services Sunday, Feb
ruary 11, the pastor acting as his own
evangelist for the first ten days. Rev.
J. T. Little, district superintendent of
the northwest district and former
pastor, will arrive the 21st to. con
tinue for at least another week. We
are expecting a great time of salva
tion. Meeting every night at 7:30
until further notice. Everybody wel

Roseburg Review: Dr. H. A. Can-
field and wife, who spent the past
few days at Ashland, arrived here

Five freight cars on a northbound
freight were ditched at one of the
switches on Siskiyou mountain
Thursday morning when the train
