Friday, September 29, a fine sup
per and entertainment were given In
Odd Fellows hall under the auspices
of the Men's Club of the Methodist
church. About one hundred people
sat down to the tables, which were
beautifully decorated with roses, and
a bountiful chicken supper was
served. The entertainment consisted
of readings and songs by Mrs. Lyn
ette V. Hovious of Medford and short
addresses by M. C. Reed, pastor of
the church, and Dr. J. C. Rollins of
Medford. Mr. Reed told how "We
Made the Pumpin Pies." Dr. Rollins
spoke bf "The Value of the Church
to the Small Community." The en
tire affair was pronounced a fine so
cial occasion. The proceeds were
devoted to the finances of the church.
Friday afternoon the ladies of the
Community Club held their meeting
at the club's rooms.
Mrs. R. J. King of Frederick at
tended the Ladies' Aid Thursday af
ternoon. Mr. James E. Fuller of Ashland
spent Thursday with Mr. and Mrs
John Fuller of Oakmount.
Mr. Charles Tryer arrived Wednes
day from Montague, Cal. Mrs. Tryer
Is expected to arrive Sunday,

who have been the guests of Mr. and

Yreka, Cal., occurred the marriage of
Fred Brandt to Edith Tryer, both of
Talent. The will make their home
at the Brandt home in .North Talent.
Both parties are well known here,
the bride being a daughter of Marlon
Tryer and living all her life In the
valley. The groom moved to this
country about two years ago from
Nebraska. Their many friends Join

John II. Thorndlke, one of the
first miners of the Applegate district.
died at his home in Jacksonville Sep
tember 29, 1916, after an illness of
short duration. Funeral services
were held at the late residence Sun
day, October 1, at 2 o'clock. Inter
ment In Jacksonville cemetery under
auspices of A. F. and A. M., Warren
lodge No. 10.
The deceased was born In West
Camden, Maine, September 5, 1832.
He came to California in 1856, where
he resided until July, 1875, moving
to Oregon, where he has resided
since. He was united In marriage to
Itoxana F. ingraham in 1852. To
this union were born three children.
He leaves to mourn his death a wife,
three-children, Larkln L. Thorndlke
of Jacksonville, Eva L. Courtney of
Kennett, John L. Thorndlke of Med
ford, and several grandchildren. Ha
was a loving and loyal father. He
was a member of the Masonic lodge.
