spending the summer with her par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. L. Hllty. in Ash
land, has returned to San Francisco,
where she will resume her musical
studies. Miss Hilty won a host of
friends while here this summer. Her
tinging was much in demand at

Surprise Party.
Miss Frieda Butterfleld gave a
surprise party at her home on Sec
ond street Thursday evening for 3.
A. Peters, Jr., who leaves soon fof
Portland to take a position in the
Canadian Bank of Commerce. The
affair was participated in by eigh
teen young people and was a com
plete surprise to the guest of honor.
There was something doing every
minute during the evening, which
opened w 1th a secret program lti
which Elwood Iledberg and Grace
King weie awarded the prize for a
vivid representation of Bluebeard.
The quotation contest was won by
Miss Gains. Following this was an
impromptu program. Several selec
tions were given by a male quartet
composed of Messrs. Hedberg,
Throne, Rush and Peters, and there
was a song by the girls and one by
the boys. During the refreshment
hour Ebe Dunn gave a toast to Mr.
Peters, who responded feelingly.
The affair was one of the happiest
within the memory of the guests,
who were: Misses Thelma Throne,
Velma Jam.'s, Vadie Peters, Ruby
McClellan, Lillian Arant, Marguerite

Mr. Jesse II. Dungan, editor and
proprietor of the Orovllle Mercury,
called at the Tidings office this
morning. Mr. Dungan Is in town
for yesterday and today only, mak
ing Ashland the northern terminus
of his trip. He states that two big
Irrigation projects are soon to be
ready for operation In the vicinity
of Orovllle, Cal., along the Featner
river. Mr. Dungan took tlmo to
walk up through the parks as far
as the automobile camp, -
