At Central Point tbey held up a man and robbed him of $20.50. The au thorities wired to Grants Pass and had the gypsies held there. Tuesday afternoon Deputy Sheriff "Curly" Wilson motored down to the Pass and arrested three of the dark-skinned holdup men. He brought them back to Gold Hill, where the prosecuting attorney met them. The gypsies were fined $50 and the $20.50 which they secured as booty was taken. They were then allowed to go on their way, or rather they were Invited to get out of the county as fast as possible and keep on going. A number of minor depredations were committed by the travelers, but nothing of a serious nature occurred In Ashland, where the police and the mayor Invited the gypsies to shorten their stay to no time at all. It Is said that in San Francisco during the winter the jails were filled with gyp sies, who seemed to enjoy the con finement and the regular meals. Finally a special ordinance was passed ejecting them from the city. All along the line the authorities fight shy of jailing them, as it does no good and is an expense upon the community. The prevalent way of handling them is to hurry them on Into the next county. Phone job orders to the Tidings. Sunday' Round Trip Rates Very Low In addition to the round trip fare for the regular one way price which was recently announced by the South ern Pacific for Sunday trips between Glendale, Ashland and way points, where the one way fare was over 50 cents, Agent Kramer announces re ceiving word of a further concession by the railroad. During the summer months In ad dition to the above round trips which did not apply to Ashland as regards the stations between Central Point and Ashland, a rate of 50 cents will be made for the round trip to Ash land from any station where the one way fare is under 50 cents. This means that Mod ford visitors on Sun day can come up and return on the J railroad for 50 cents. This rate applies between any two stations be tween Ashland and Glendale. South ern Pacific, passing through Rose burg on his way to Portland from a trip to San Francisco, denied that overland passenger trains Nos. 53 and 54 will be taken off the run. He went to San Francisco to confer with higher officials regarding train serv I ice and schedules, but said that these trains will remain on. However, he admitted that this action was dis cussed by the officials. Roseburg Review: Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Cordon and Mr. and Mrs. O. D. McAllister will leave here Sunday for Detroit, Mich., where they will at tend the International convention of Railway Trainmen, , Mrs. Cordon Is a delegate from the Ladles' Auxiliary, while Mr. McAllister Is a delegate from the local lodge 'of trainmen. Ed Renfro of Roseburg, a well known brakeman for the Southern Paclflo Company, has perfected plans for an automatic release for the air brake of an engine or cars. The In vention is a decided Improvement over the old system and has been tak en up by an eastern railway company which Is Investigating Its practicabil ity. The patent has been applied for and the- more, complete plant bare just been drawn and sent to the com pany, who will superintend the man ufacture should It he found advisable to purchase the invention. Appoints Medford Picnic Committee Medford Tribune: , President A, L. Hill, of the Com mercial club, yesterday appointed George T. Collins, C. M. Kldd and E. T. Schmidt as a committee to or ganize the details of the "Medford day" picnic proposed to be held In Llthia park at Ashland some day in the near future. Ashland has extended the Invitation to towns along the Southern Pacific Into California and north to Portland to Join these picnic gatherings In that park. Medford day will be given a date by the committee. Hal.McNalr spent Monday attend ing to business matters In Medford.
