Hitherto It has not usually been found profitable to ship fresh cherries from this sectioa to distant markets because of the unsatisfactory condi tion In which the product arrives. These Investigations demonstrate that a great part of the decay can be pre vented by the exercise of proper care, but unless care is exercised there is little hope of disposing of the fresh cherry crop of this region, In distant markets. Experiments carried on by the gov ernment show the following results with cherries: Fruits which were carefully picked and packed were placed In refrigerator cars In which the conditions were made as nearly as possible with those under which the fruit would travel in actual com mercial practice. At the end of five days In the iced cars, the carefully handled fruit showed an average of only 0.5 per cent of docay, while the commercially handled fruit showed an avrrape of 2.S per cent of decay or practically six times the amount. At the end of 10 days the carefully handled fruit had 1.5 per cent of de cay, and the commercially handled fruit showed 12.3 per cent or eight times as much. Experiments were also conducted both with carefully handled and com mercially handled fruit to determine the value of pre-coollng before plac ing the fruit in refrigerator cars. Those tests show that pre-cooling is undoubtedly of value, nevertheless It cannot be relied upon to prevent losses due to careless handling. Upholds Yreka Jitney Ordinance A decision handed down Friday by Judge Lodge in the superior court denies the writ of prohibition against the Yreka jitney ordinance asked by the owner of the Montague-Yreka auto line. The decision upholds the validity of the Yreka jitney ordinance and de clares that cities may regulate and even prohibit jitneys from using the street. The Yreka law placed a li cense on the auto stages and other strict restriction which caused the owner to announce that he would be forced from business. The ordiance was passed to protect the Montague Yreka railroad, which had suffered heavy inroads by the jitney traffic. F. T. New Process Will Save Opp Gold Spokane parties have leased the tailings of the Opp mine, near Jack sonville, and will at once Install the new oil flotation process to save the gold. The gold found in the Opp mine is very fine. By the flotation process it is said that 90 per cent of It can be recovered, as against about 50 per cent by any other process. This process Is being adopted exten sively in the large properties of other districts. New machinery will be installed in the Opp mine, increasing the output of2 5 or 30 tons a day to 200 or 250 tons a day. It is understood that this machinery and other equipment are on the way to the mine now. Mr. Downey, a mining man of Spokane, is here attending to preliminary ar rangements for the installing of the new process. April Weather at Ashland.
