Watson In Reference to His Candidacy for Nomin ation for District Attorney on the Republican Ticket at the Coming Primary Election, May 19, 1916: If you are interested In an economical administra tion ot county affairs, read the following and deter mine whether in your judgment I am qualified to administer its legal features. Having announced my candidacy at the coming primary election to bo held May 19, 1916, for nom ination on the Republican ticket Tor the office of District Attorney for Jackson county, I assume that there are a large number of voters of said county, with whom I am not acquainted, that would like to know who I am, what 1 am and what are my quali fications for that orfice. There was a time when, I think, I knew practically every voter in this county. That time is past and there are a great many people here now who are not familiar with the people and the situations of a Tew years ago. Came to Juckson County in 1871 and was Admitted to Practice in 1877. I came to this state and county in 1871, and with the exception of about eight years have lived here continuously ever since. I was admitted to practice law by the Supreme Court of Oregon in 1877; in the same class was Hon. George E. Chamberlain, now U. S. senator. 1 began my practice In this county when It embraced what is now Jackson, Klamath and Lake. I moved to Lakeview when Lake county was formed from the eastern portion of Jackson and embraced what is now Klamath and Lake, opened the first law ofrice in Southern Oregon eaBt of the Cascade mountains. My brother W. W. Watson, who Is now on the Daily Tribune at Medrord, joined me in start'ng the State Line Herald, the Hrst newspaper in Southern Ore gon east ot the Cascades. Was Presidential Elector on the Republican Ticket in 1880. Collector of Customs From 1882 to 1880. In 1880 I was elected Presidential Elector on the Republican ticket and was the messenger to carry the Garfield vote to Washington city, and was a representative there from Oregon at the inaugura tion of President Garfield. In 1882 I was appointed Collector of Customs for the Southern District of Oregon and stationed at Coos Bay. At the close of my term I moved to Astoria, at the mouth or the Columbia river, and was for several years Dep uty District Attorney there under the Hon. Thomas A. McBrlde, who Is now on the Supreme bench of this state. Returned to Asldand in 1888. In 1888 I returned to Ashland, and practiced my profession in this county continuously until six years ago, when in consequence of ill health I was forced to retire temporarily. I bought me a little ranch and spent most of my time at out-of-door work until I fully regained my health, and for tne past two years my health has been better than for twenty years before that, both mentally and physic ally. Last fall I again opened a law office at Ash land, and find mysolf dropping into tho practice as naturally as though I had never been out of It. In 1808 Was Klectcd IMstrict Attorney for Josc pldno, Jackson, Wanuith and Lake OomitioH. In 1898 I was elected on the Republican ticket to the office of District Attorney for the First Judicial District of Oregon, which then embraced what is now Josephine, Jackson, Klamath and Lake coun ties', and to the record I made while 1 was an incum bent of that office I respectfully refer as to my quai lHcatlons thereror. Up to the date ot my retire ment I practiced law in Jackson county for twenty four years, and those who lived here during that long period are familiar with my qualifications as a lawyer I have had quite a large experience in criminal practice, both prosecution and defense. There are plenty of people in all parts of tho county who know my qualification, and to them I respect fully refer others who desire Information. Member of tho Orexm Conservation Commission. I was a member of the Oregon Conservation Com mission from the date of its organization until about a year ago, and was one of the committee that framed our present water code, and assisted in put ting it through the legislature. Was On the Slate of the Republican State Central Committee for Sixteen Years m One of the Organ izers and Stumpers of the State. , , , , I . nn the slate of the Republican State Cen tral Committee for sixteen years as one of the or galnzers and stumpers of the state, and have ' ' ' ' ' ' ' (Paid Advertisement ) 1: x i i . .. .. stumped nearly every part of ft. I have at various times, running through a number or years, been city attorney or Ashland, and my practice was an active and constant ono. Was Active for Many Years in the Anti-Saloon Fight. AgniiiNt the Saloon. Tho people of this county who were here at the time know that I was one of the first to take the field In opposition to the saloons, and bellovo J am accredited with having no lltt e part In bringing about the splendid situation in that regard. I long ago recognized the baleful influence of the saioou and made, my fight against it oponly and with all the vigor I possessed. Those who know me need not bo told that I will use all the ability 1 possess In my effort to enforce the liquor law of this state. I believe and hope that in a few yeurs more the who e civilized world will put its ban on the nefai ioiiB use of the traffic. It can not be expected that the first draft of a now law on unusual lines will be perfect. Chuiuc may have to be made from time to tlmo as nocoi si ' seems to require. Laws are made to be enforced, and If I should receive this nomination, and t li the election, I pledge mysolf to use all of my abl, i reinforced with a long experience, to enforce all laws that sha'l come within my provence, witl o fear or favor. Ilavo Always Been a Republican. Miiny Yom . I'roNocuLoi'. I am and always have been a Republican, tho I have many times exercised the right of e American citizen and voted for men on tho op ... tion ticket, when I believed them bettor quail taking Into consideration the moral phases invo I take it that partlzanship should be held secon I right and Justice. I have lived long enough to b that it Is not safe to swa low a packago without spection simply because the label seems proper I am soliciting your suffrage with full ronfidi in my ability to perforin tho duties of the ot and am giving herewith an index to my past you may deternilno from my record uud ou t decide what your voto shall be. Hxtravngntico Malira High Tuxo. It is the Out; the District Attorney to Look Out for llio Into of the ntlzons In Kvery Branch of the Oi Government. Tho administration of county affairs is every i zen's concern. Every official Is responsible wit the scope of his duties and activities for the 0 thereof to the people. I'nnecessaryveipeuses rt In taxes. Therefore it should be his strenuous deavor to so conduct his part in the ndmluistrai that no unnecessary burden shall result. It is part of a District Attorney to keep an eye opet the whole field and to proceed as the law dir. whenever he discovers graft, corruption or extn gance, and I promise to be thus observant active if you honor me with your support and I s he elected.
