BLIND ORATORS
IN NEW CONGRESS
Similar Careers of Senator Gore
and Representativo Schall.
In tlie present congress there are two
Wind men, one iu tlie senate. Senntor
Thomas V. Gore of Oklahoma, nud one
in tlie house of representatives, Thomas
p. Srhnll of Minnesota. Senator Gore
Is a Democrat, while Schall U a Pro
gressive. The careers of the two men
have remarkable similarities. I'otli lost
their sight through accident. ftb had
to struggle against poverty besides the
handicap of blindness, both have won
fame as orators, and both won their
wives through the spell of oratory.
Senator Gore lost his sight when
eleven years old through au accident

Nevertheless he gained an education
and graduated at the law by being
read to. He never attended a school
for the blind. He won a well merited
reputation as a lawyer and was espe
cially noted for his forensic ability. A
forceful speech be made wlille cam
paigning In Oklahoma won for him the
wife who bus played so Important a
part in his advancement In political
life. She has been his eyes to blin in
many ways. Today Senator Gore is
one of the most popular orators In the
country, and his power of concentra
tion and reiuarkulilc memory make
tiim a dangerous opponent In debute.
Like Senator Gore. Itepresentative
Schall dceudM largely upon his wife to
be his eyes, tie was stricken with
blindness In his young manhood
through an accident. He was lighting
a cigar from an electric lighter and re
ceived a shock that seared out his eyes
He was practicing law In Minneapolis
and was married at the time. He first
met his wife after an oratorical con
test. In which he carried off the prize.
He considers his real victory to be the
mihseipiciit winning of his wife.
His success iu his years of darkness
has been phenomenal. This is his first
term in congress, where lie has been
preceded by a well earned reputation
as a lawyer and orator.

The Lady or the Tiger Riddle.
"Perhaps tho most Interesting thing
about The Lady or the Tljer?' " Frank
R. Stockton once said, "Is its great
popularity among tho savage races. It
has been told again and again by the
story tellers of Burma. A missionary
once told the story to a tribe of Ka
rens iu Burma. Wheu she came back
a year Inter the tribe surrounded her
and wanted to know if she had found
out whether I cannot answer the ques
tion, for I have uo earthly ideu myself.
I have never been able to decldo
whether the lady or the tiger came out
of that door, i'et I must defend my
self. Teople for yeurs have upbraided
me for leaving it a mystery. Some
used to write mo that I had uo right
to impose upon the good nature of the
public in that manner. However, when
I started in to write the story I in
tended to finish it. Iitit it would never
let Itself be finished. I could not de

Courage and Courtesy.
It Is recorded of Geueral Sheridan
that he was once asked who, In his
opinion, was the most reliable of the
corps commanders, and he unhesitat
ingly answered, General Hancock. He
said, "If I wunted a man to stay
where I put him, If I located him at
night and wanted to find him right
there In the morning, I'd select Han
cock." And then further Sheridan
said: : . i
"For genuine politeness and gentle
regard for women Hancock was in
comparable. If Mrs. Hancock came
Into his room twenty times in half
an hour be would always stand up."

A "White ChriHtmus."
On Christmas eve the Baptist Sun
day Bchool celebrated a "White
Christmas." The idea of a "White,
Christmas" is to give rather than to
receive. After a program in which
the children took part with the
grownups, and which all enjoyed from
first to last, the gifts, wrapped in ;
white, were brought by representa-1
lives of the classes to the platform. '
Flour, meat, potatoes, canned fruit, '
apples, sugar, other groceries, toys, 1
clothes and candy literally stocked ,
the platform. .Then on Christmas
morning members of the Sunday
school, including some Of the boys
and girls, set out to distribute the
"White Christmas" gifts. The occa
sions of the program and the distri
bution were happy, Joyous ones.
Chrstmas was thus kept in the spirit I
