This assertion is made in the first annual report of the state industrial accident commission, which was issued recent ly, covering the nctive period from June 30, 1914, to June 30, 1915, and also the period of organization from November 5, 1913, to June 30, 1914. Tho estimate of injuries for the coming year is the figure that holds for tho year lately ended. To tho end that, accidents may be fewer the accident commission will Inaugurate a campaign for tho prevention of uc cldents in Oregon. The present per centage of accidents is not greater than In other states, but, to quote Commissioner Abrams, "It is too great at that, and we propose to cut it down." "We will try to put a stcroopticon lecture on the road," said Mr. Abranis, "and some one connected with this office will travel through the stato and give tho lectures. The talks will be to workingmen as well as to employers with a view to cut ting down the number ot accidents. We will aak them to co-operate with the commission in this work." The report shows that during the first year of the commission's exist- epce it has cost the employers $1.15 for each $1 paid to injured workmen. The total operating expenses of the office, not including the amount paid out in claims, were about 8 per cent of the amount paid in, considered a very low rate. "Every accident we can prevent during the coming year means a sav ing of just that much for the em ployer," said Commissioner Abrams, "and the more we can cut down the accident fund the more exemptions we can give." The commission calls attention to its exhibit at the state fair, which , shows tthe advantage of employers coming under the act, especially Dead Indian Road to Crater Lake 'LOST i i farmers. "Safety First" bulletins on (accident prevention, printed for the .benefit of employers, are distributed. "The tables contained in another "rt of this report will show that in Oregon during the first twelve months the law has been in opera tion, only $1.13 1-3 has been re quired to place the $1 in benefits in the hands of Injured workmen. This difference in cost is emphasized when it is recalled that Wisconsin has an area of but 56,066 square miles, a population of 2,3J3,8bO, and an av erage of 42.2 people to the square mile, while Oregon with its 96,699 square miles of territory, 672,765 of population, and an average of seven people to the square mile, presents conditions under which the cost might properly be expected to be much greater. The earned premiums of stock companies in Wisconsin in 1914 amounted to $1,424,278. Of this sum, 48 per cent was paiu or is to be paid in compensation benefits, 38 per cent was required as expenses and 14 per cent remained as profits, or a total for expenses and profits of 52 per cent. In Oregon last year the compensation benefits paid out or set aside totaled $370,200.46. The administrative expense amounted to 149.528.05. making a total of bene fits and expense of $419,728.61. With the same proportion of Income used in expenses and profits, the stock companies would have required the sum of $771,250.95 to have handled the insurance subject to the Oregon act during the past twelve months, a saving in favor of the Ore gon method of $351, 522. 44. The tourist season at Crater Lake closes today officially, although num erous parties will make the trip yet this fall as the road's will remain open for some time to come. The camp at Anna Creek closed last week. Tho hotel closes today. Travel to the lake this year was practically double that of last year. Tho lake is begin ning to take its rightful place as one of the best known of the scenic won ders of tho world. Every year from now on will see increased numbers of visitors at the lake. When the road through Dead In dian is opened up Ashland will have an entrance to the luke which will surpass in ninny ways both the Rogue river and tho Klamath Falls entrance. The excellent mountain road winding up to the 4,000-foot level of the Dead Indian plateau, with a constantly changing vista of the valley of the Rogue, Jit. Ashland and the Siskiyou range and finally, as the summit is readied, of the snow-clad mountains in endless succession Oehlnd tho Sis kiyou range nnd of old Shasta himself towering above them ali, a mountain grade which offers no especial diffi culties to the tourist and which rivals the famous Siskiyou grade in its scenic wonderfulness, will become In time a famous bit of the west. Then after tho mountain top is reached a few minutes brings the autoist into the prettiest piece of country in souhern Oregon, the Dead Indian plateau. Here the grass is always green, the air carries an Indefinable something which stimulates the senses and awakens the real joy of living. From beautiful little open glades the auto plunges Into cool forests and then back out Into the open again. The trip through Dead Indian will never be forgotten. Even now the roads from Ashland to within a few miles of the Lake of the Woods are a delight. Lake of the Woods has been called the prettiest mountain lake in the west. It has been described time and time again. When our road through to Crater Lake is opened, few and far between will be the tourists who can resist stopping for a day at Lake of the Woods. Twelve miles beyond Lake of the Woods is Pelican Bay, acknowledged to be the premier sportsman's para dise of the Pacific coast. Then comes Cherry creek, Crystal creek and the numerous other fishing streams around upper Klamath Lake. The highway skirts the lake to Fort Klam ath, where it joints with the K'amath Falls road. From Fort Klamath to the lake the road follows Anna creek nnd winds along the rim of Anna Creek canyon, an attraction second only to Crater Lake itself. This road from Ashland to the lake is about ninety miles in length, and of the ninety miles the only portion which demands immediate attention is that between Lake of the Woods and Pelican Bay and for a few miles this side of Lake of the Woods.
