Mr. and Mrs. Ned of Medford were bulsness visitors In Talent Thursday evening. The Royal Neighbors of America gave an Ice cream social over R. J. Luke's confectionery shop Friday af ternoon and evening. Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Cook spent Thursday evening In Medford attend ing the Bryan address. Ed Lemmings bought the Frank Snooks house In Talent last week. The house Is In a very good location and will make a nice home. Mr. and Mrs. George Trask, on the Little Applegate, Intended to give a dancing party last Saturday even ing, but on account of the serious Panama Canal's First Year. The Panama canal started opera tion under the handicap of the war as well as under that other handi cap Inseparable from new undertak ings, but Its earnings In the first year, from July 1, 1914, to July 1, 1915, exceeded expenses by about $224,000, the earnings having been $4,424,306 and the cost of operation and maintenance $4,400,000. This balance falls far short of paying in terest on the cost, which, at 3 per cent on $400,000,000, would be $12, 000.000, but traffic will doubtless Increase this year and when the war ends the estimate of $10,500,000 a 'year by Prof. Emery R. Johnson for the first year may be reached or ex ceeded. J. W. Metcalf, superintendent of the Shasta division of the Southern plNc. and C. A. Wester, division engineer, were up from Dunsmulr th last of the week and were taken over the Pacific highway by Agent A. S. Rosenbaum of Medford.
